I use final cut pro on a macpro 15 inch and use the avermedia capture card. i also use photoshop, compressor and motion

Definitely using Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects, Audition, and Photoshop for the graphic part of the channel. The best part is that (if you dont know already) adobe has a great deal where you can get ALL of the programs they offer for $50/mo. Seeing as I use them for my work (wedding films) it is the best option for me. not only that, there are a host of other plug ins and presets and LUT's you can download to get the most out of your films. ALSO with the adobe suite, you can seamlessly transfer footage between the programs. so if i have my timeline in Premiere and i want to add some animation or graphic work to it, i can simply right click the clip, click edit in After Effects. It then opens that clip in AE, you do the edit, hit Save and it saves it right back into your Premiere timeline. Same goes for the audio editing using Audition. :D hope this info was helpful!

I have a few Final Cut Pro questions.

Can you have as many text, image, and video overlays as you want?

If I put text in an overlay, can I use any installed OSX font, or do I just get a small set like in iMovie?

I often put images as overlays in my video, but I have to edit their duration and fade in and fade out every single time. Can I set defaults for that?

Thanks for any help.

Our setup is pretty basic.

Elgato HD60 for footage and the associated software for recording,
Blue Yeti sitting between us on a f*cking cardboard box for that authentic professional feeling,
PowerDirector 14 (REALLY didn't want to pay a monthly subscription for Adobe software),
Audacity for audio does a fairly good job as any (though the Yeti DID come with 'paid' software),
Combination of GIMP and Photoshop for artwork depending on who does what.

Josh is a photoshop baby and I am a gimp because I'm cheap and sleezy.

Always wanted to say that.

Final Cut Pro X & Adobe After Effects - I work as a professional Video editor. In my opinion there are only two softwares that are best for video editing - Final Cut Pro X and Adobe Premiere Pro. AVID is still used as a standard in Hollywood but it's only there because AVID pay a lot of money to keep it there. It feels very outdated and not as intuitive.

Premiere Pro: Is great for Beginners, intermediate & advanced levels - very intuitive. Older versions used the crash a lot! But they've fixed that since (Always turn on autosave)

Final Cut Pro X: It's what i use at work, it's great for organising projects, syncing audio & multicam shoots. There is no save option as it constantly saves every move you make. It's a beast when it comes to big projects. Takes some getting used to.

Adobe After Effects: I use this for motion graphics and small 2d animations - Intermediate learning curve. Very fun when you get the hang of it but it takes a while to learn.

Maya: This is what I use for 3D animating. Very high learning curve. It's for creating 3D models for later compositing into videos or standalone animations.

Some of this stuff is quite advanced but I find it's best to learn industry standards if you want to get serious about video editing.

Dont quote me on this, but If you have the full version of FcX than all of that should be a brease. I currently use premiere pro but i know a lot of the same functions are available in FCX as its about a 50/50 split in the film making community between the 2 programs, i would say yes you can have as many text layers as you want, the fonts should run off of your hard drive, so yah, you should get the whole lo that is on your mac. as for duration, i know I have to change that every time in premiere but thats not to hard with a cut and then delete. and for the fade out. you should have a "fade in/out" preset transition already in there that you can just slap on the end.[DOUBLEPOST=1461168537,1461168260][/DOUBLEPOST]

What do you like better between Premiere and FCX? I have been using the adobe suite forever now and i love it. a little bit buggy sometimes but overall a great bunch of programs for only $50/mo. ps I LOVE your videos, that garlic trick is my FAVORITE!! I always use a mason jar :) my gf has a channel with some great recipe videos "Elysia Vegan" is the search in YT for her as just typing Elysia gets you nowhere close haha. anyway, id love to hear your pro's and con's between the 2 programs and keep up the great personality you have in your videos!!! :D

Sorry for the delay! I find that FCX is far better at just keeping what I work on very organised which is quite helpful for sharing projects. It has a feature called storyline which snaps everything together on the timeline, which at first makes you feel quite constraint and a little annoying till you get used to it. Then it's a feature you cant live without (or I can't anyways!) When you import into FCX it transcodes all your footage to ProRes which works very smoothly when editing. I don't think FCX has ever crashed on me.

Hope that help a little! Also thanks so much for the complements!! Your editing skills on your channel are pretty amazing :) I assume you edit your girlfriends stuff too, you can tell that you really have your own style
