I personally use Sony Vegas Pro 12 for all of my video editing. I haven't really experimented with using any other video editors but Sony Vegas suits all my needs and I love it.
 
I use Cyberlink power director as my overlay editor and movie maker as my music adder and video editor. Movie maker can do wonders you just need something else for effects and overlays.
 
I started off with Windows Movie Maker (in my beginning days)
Then I went to Sony Vegas
Now it's either Premiere or FCP. Which ever one I choose (usually it's a coin flip)
I've gotten pretty used to both, so either one works fine
