Photoshop you can get for free but it would be an older c2 addition. Free alternative include gimp, paint.net, pixlr

For my first couple of videos I used Windows movie maker but then bit the bullet and bought Sony Movie Studio Platinum and it's ended up making the editing experience rather enjoyable ^^

I use Adobe Premiere Pro but I used to use Final Cut Pro many a year ago and I loved it.

I'm currently using Adobe Premiere Pro CC, and Adobe After Effects CC. It was part of my tuition so I'm all game for using them. I may use Avid once I get out of college. I don't recommend Final Cut Pro X for anyone thinking of going down that road.
