I have been a relatively recent lurker to YTTalk, and I just recently got TubeBuddy with the Pro license. What finally pushed me sign up is that I wanted to give feedback on this. How clearly can I put it?

I have a SUPER strong preference for flat fees.

This preference is strong that I recognize that even when it is irrational (e.g., I would pay more with a flat fee than I would with recurring), I prefer the flat fee. (For example, I haaate the Adobe Creative Cloud situation even though I read plenty of analyses when it first came out saying that it was a much better deal to go with monthly subscription than the comparable flat fee costs for CS6 master collection stuff.)

So, I upgraded to Pro. There is almost zero chance I'll go beyond that, even though I like the TubeBuddy features and can see how the ones that are limited at the Pro level might be nice.

Thanks for the feedback @subversiveasset. We go back and forth and honestly when I see a recurring fee for a product, I don't like it either (Adobe for example - like you said). But - the thing is, if we were to do a flat fee for a specific version of TubeBuddy like Adobe used to be... if YouTube changes the layout to their website, it could completely break and old version of TubeBuddy and you'd be forced to purchase the new version of TubeBuddy. It's just a little to messy because are constantly making updates and have to keep up with YouTube changes so we can't easily create different versions of TubeBuddy and charge a flat fee for each version like Adobe used to do. What I try to do is give people free trials, big discounts for smaller channels and great customer service to help people feel comfortable that it's worth paying for and that we're not going anywhere. We're 1 month away of losing all our customers which ensures that we are constantly doing our best to keep everyone happy.

That's a good explanation, although I didn't think that YouTube changed their layout *that* frequently. (Or does any update, no matter how small, trigger this?) But then I have a couple of questions:

How does it work for the free version of the extension, then? (I had to pay to upgrade, but not to initially use the extension...how many people never upgrade?)

I see that there is a discount to paying yearly, but it seems like the price is still denominated on monthly terms. Is it possible to pay for a year upfront (I haven't tried exploring that on the site, so I don't know if that's an option that I would see if I tried that)

YouTube hasn't changed their layout much but the potential is always there. For example, to see which user is logged in, we need to look at some properties of the web page (things that aren't visible on screen) in the html code so if 1 line changes, it could break everything. Which would be a very simply fix on our end but yeah, layout changes have not affected us much at all so far. It's just the potential of it.

Lots of people never upgrade and just use the free version. Certain features are limited such as Tag Explorer, Suggested Tags, Upload Defaults, Canned Responses. And several features you can't use at all in the free version - Card/Annotation templates, bulk tools, Facebook publishing. We try to give enough out for free to keep people happy and help the smaller channels and then charge a fee for more powerful tools which funds us to keep developing more tools.

Yes, all yearly orders are paid upfront. So you pay for the entire year and it's set up to auto-renew each following year. We send a reminder 1 week before the auto-renew to make sure you want to keep your subscription and you don't forget that it's coming up. You can cancel if you don't want to re-new and you'd never have to pay again. The monthly denominations are showing you what the breakdown is per month over 12 months but it's one single payment up front. If you'd rather go down that path, I could issue you a refund on your last order and you could sign up again. Thanks!

i'm actually a little confused at how I was able to get pro for flat-rate of $25 then or how it differs from Pro at yearly rate?

oh, that was a temporary promotion we did. It was $25 flat fee for a limited time. Before that it was $9/month and it's back to being $9/month. You happen to order at the right time and will now get unlimited use for life for that one time payment of $25. Forget what I said about ordering Yearly because you wouldn't want to do that based on the deal you got.

I, too have discovered it today and wondered why it was hardly mentioned elsewhere. Very handy to use!
