I've tested everything under the sun.
Some playlists and videos convert better into subs, while other convert better into earned views. Our earned views range from 10% to almost 100% depending on videos.
Same for sub acquisition cost. Some videos convert subs at $2.12 (the lowest), some at $10 per sub (which is what you got).
There's really no way to predict what viewers will like, you just have to test different videos, at different time, to different targets, and see what works for your content.
I always have keywords, which are simply my tags.
I may target a channel, such as a channel that has the same types of videos that I am running ads for, as long as the videos on that channel are still getting traffic (check statistics under their video if they have it enabled to get an idea of their traffic).
I promote individual videos and/or playlists with several videos and distribute the campaign $ across the videos.
Wow, thanks for the insight, gave me some more ideas to play with. Just changed my campaigns now a bit with the information you gave me and I'll see if the subscribe rate improves. :)

I've tested everything under the sun.
I've also tried promoting my highest retention video, highest view count videos, lowest view count videos to boost them, and lowest retention to get a higher retention from Adwords than from native viewers.
So much info in this one sentence, if you don't mind sharing. could you drop another two sentences on which techniques proved to be not worth investing time and money on?

Thanks for taking your time to write this, much appreciated.

PS, love the Spidey outfits of the girls in your latest video :D

My goal for the end of this December is to gain 50 subs. But its kinda hard since nobody really knows who i am and i don't really know how to promote my self leaving me stuck at 17 subs. that's why i need help if you have any tactics please reply to this post thank you :bounce:
I checked out your primosprime channel. I also don't know what kind of channel you have. You've got a lot of work ahead!

It will be harder to get those 50 subs unless you invest more time developing your channel. Everyone has an "about" page. Please fill that out, it is where you tell people who you are and what kind of videos you do. If it helps, just browse through a couple of big channels you want to be like and take a look at what they do.

you only have like 5 videos. I couldn't tell from the titles and thumbnails that you were a video game channel. at first glance, I thought it was a blog site or something to do with tech. i checked two vids and I think you're a gamer channel. you probably need more videos to get people to subscribe. and we all have short attention spans so they probably need to understand what kind of videos you have and be interested from a quick look.

If you build it they will come. Its hard to get people to subscribe for a membership if you haven't built the stadium yet.

once you have some fundamentals covered and a nice collection of content. then these are some ways to help "speed up" the normal subscription rate process.

sub4sub - quickest way and worst way. dont do it. hurts you in long run.
engage with other channels - watch videos from channels you like (maybe not too big a channel) and leave comments and engage with the youtubers. but don't spam them. if you subscribe to 10 channels one of them might sub back to you without your asking. and you should limit your comments so youtube doesnt hide your comments.
giveaways - this can help get you subscribers if done correctly
adwords - this can help get you subscribers if done correctly

giveaways - this can help get you subscribers if done correctly

Sure that will get you quick subs but it will not convert into fans or loyal subscribers. They are only interested in the giveaway. Besides many will unsub anyway if they didn't win the prize. Do giveaways for people who are already interested in your channel(subscribers, fans ect).

Highest retention videos: Adwords retention closely follows native traffic retention, so that is a good way to get more views and more watch time on your best (retention) videos.

Highest view count: I found Adwords to be a waster on money. The video is high view because it has been picked up by the algo, so there's really no point putting more money into it, let the algo place it for free.

Lowest view count: Waster of money as well. The videos are lowest view for a reason - they are not that good and engaging (our first 20+ videos will fit this). Money spent on Adwords will bump traffic during the campaign, but traffic falls off to pre-campaign levels after it's finished.

Lowest retention: Once again, the retention is low for a reason. Adwords retention was sometimes higher, sometimes lower than native traffic (within about 10%) so it's not really enough to make a long term difference. No effects after Adwords campaign finished.

I've scaled back on Adwords in the last 4 weeks as there seems to be sufficient traffic from suggested. I'm now monitoring to see native traffic for new videos and get an idea of what videos are popular without promotion.

Prior to that, I experimented with the above strategies, and a few other variations. I mainly focus on promoting videos that resulted in the lowest sub acquisition cost, and the highest earned views.

I've had a quick look at your channel:

You ran Adwords for "Spiderman unboxes peppa Pig mini caravan" which then gave you Earned Views on "Spiderman makes Toy Story Lots..." [No I didn't hack into your account, the second video is in suggested spot #8 so got traffic from the Adwords video]. I recommend to maximize subs you have an Annotation throughout the whole video inviting viewers to subscribe. To encourage more Earned Views setup Cards pointing to your best videos. You may also want to setup Adwords for a playlist and put them all into 1 campaign and select 'maximize for views'. But get the cards and annotations setup first. Once you have data on which videos convert best for subs and earned views, list the factors of those videos and make more of those videos.

Thanks so much for your detailed response, saves me a ton of experimentation and time! :up2: I would have expected more traction from rebooting some older video's but your analyses seem spot-on.

On you scaling back adwords, yeah your channel is gaining a ton of traction I see over the last 1,5 month, stellar job on that one and wish you a top 500 spot before christmas!

Thanks for checking out my channel/video, you are right about the end cards, I asked you in another post as well and will need to try it out this weekend. Just came back from a business trip this week so have some catching up to do on some of my new found knowledge. One thing I love about running a channel is that there is so much to learn, wish I had more time though :)

I'll also put the subscribe annotation up, but it will only show on desktops and a lot of my views come from mobile and tablets as well. Did you try making a campaign for desktops only to make the ad-campaign more optimized regarding sub-gain? I'm going to test end cards this weekend for subs as well, as far as i understood you can only show them in the last 20 seconds of the video but need to dive more into that
(edit: never mind, just found out that the end card is still in beta :(. It features a nice subscribe button though that also works on mobile)

Thanks again for sharing your experience, your posts are great and well thought through.

Thanks for the well wishes!

Yep most of our views are from mobile devices, It think the desktop/laptop is on the way out big time, at least for kids channels.

I don't have access to those fancy end cards yet, so it's steady as she goes for the time being. Soon as it's rolled out will have to learn it and implement it.

Yeah, lets wait until they become available, they look pretty cool.

PS, just got your PM, unfortunately I can't reply until I posted 50 times (still 20 to go). Ping me your email address and I'll send you pictures of my setup directly.

all the options i mentioned for speeding up the sub rate process, those methods alone are probably equally not going to convert as well into high percentage of real fans or loyal subscribers. theres a lot more to doing giveaways, adwords, engaging, etc to increase odds of successful subscriptions.[DOUBLEPOST=1470702685,1470702572][/DOUBLEPOST]
