Thank you so much for that. I type everything on my cell and I don't think anyone's mistyping is worse then mine.

I think I started vlogging because I started liking other vlog channels and thought it would be cool for us to do as a family and recently have been going back and forth in my head about what the heck I am doing and if I am ruining my channel. I started out with a target audience of boys around the ages of 4-10. Our son is 6 so it was about things he likes. But we getting all there other kids channels who's parents are the ones commenting and I think that kind of swayed me to say what if k made content for parents and they might actually watch what I post. So I did a couple of videos like the coffee one and a fish tank one to hot adults and parents. So my thought was directing our channel towards families where parents can watch as well as their kid's but I think that is really something hard to accomplish, especially as a new channel.

So I think I am going back to a target audience of Boys around my son's age and we will do fun toy stuff but also be involved in the videos with him so that sense of family is still there but it will be about him and toys and not about the family.

So tonight we recorded some blind bag videos. I did one with my son, my wife recording one with him and then all three of us did one together. I think I got into trying to much to quick instead of just sticking with one thing and seeing how it pans out. To be honest, I am not really in love with vlogging after doing it, it makes everything you do twice as long then it would normally take because you have to setup camera's for different angles and shots to make it interesting and always have to try and make something out of nothing. LOL

Thanks again for your helpful advice and it couldn't come at a better time. I just started turning some of the vlogs to private to get a more of a uniform looking channel. Maybe leave the more kid oriented ones in there like the zoo and stuff like that until I get more videos to replace them. I do have my video about fishtanks that is one of our best performers. I can't put that one away yet, I don't think. LOL

Hope you guys have a wonderful trip!

you should look up a channel called "funnel vision". my son has been watching their vlog trip to legoland on repeat. I recently discovered they have a bunch of other channels. i think one of their channels is for gaming? and they a channel for skylander toys. and some other channels. their other channels are not very obvious because the names are so different (unlike hobbykidstv where all the names have hobby). but if you recognize the dad's voice and his kids faces when they are younger then you'll figure out which channels are from them. i dont know how their channels are divided or categorized.

Love the channel - and sorely missing an intro after the first 3-4 seconds, your video quality is so good, the montage is great. I'd also add a byline below Derrick Toys in the header image saying what the channel is about. Other than that nj :)

We are actually subbed to Funnel Vision and as for the Hobby Family, their videos are on my sons tablet 24/7. My daughter walks around just hollering out Hobby Pig. LOL

I think as smaller YouTubers it's really hard to run duplicate channels. It's hard enough to build up one when you start, but when you get big you can easily promote to your own subscribers and grow your other channels quickly that way.

A couple months ago I created a second channel which was an adult based channel targeting parents and parenting topics. I made 2 videos for it but just didn't have the time to spend on it to even try and grow it, so for now it's just sitting there. I don't know what I was thinking at the time but I came back to reality now. LOL

For us the retention rate is pretty low, I'm not sure at the moment since we are not home but I will look up the analysis once I have access to a computer. When we first started the video length are pretty short around 3-7 mins. It was not intentional, just that it was hard for us to make it long and kept it interesting at the same time. Even now most of our top view videos are around 5-7 mins. We been trying to stretch our videos out a bit longer because we notice our longer videos seems to get better pay rate.If you look at Toys Freak, their videos are super short and sweet and gets millions of views within days! At the end of the day it's all about Watch Time, keep people watching YouTube the longest you can lol! Have you read this article from tubefilter about reverse engineering YouTube algorithm?http://www.tubefilter.com/2016/06/23/reverse-engineering-youtube-algorithm/
It might answer your question about the length of the videos because we are still experiencing with different lengths ourself.

I agree about other channel trying to promote their channel in the comment section and not really watching it so it hurts retention rate. Unfortunately there's no way around it unless you disable comments.

What's your target audience? I think as a new channel it might be more beneficial to be niche specific. Looking at your channel you have hot wheels, Starbucks pumpkin latte, then French press coffee, and some fun family vlog type videos. The people who liked to watch your French Press Coffee (adult mostly I'm assuming) might not be into Hotwheels( kid mostly and some adult I'm sure ) Even vlog is too broad. Who's the target audience on your vlog? Parents? Kids? Most successful channel is niche specific and have a separate channel for their vlog. Even Toys channel is too broad! Age of target audience? Of course you can totally keep doing what your doing as long as you guys having fun and that's what matter the most! You don't wanna burn out and feel like you have to make videos instead of wanting to make videos. Like I mention in the post before, we didn't do vlog videos until much later, and those type of videos for us should really belong on a different channel which we are planing to start soon. Once you built a fan base and people start caring about your daily life, then vlog type contain will do just as well if not more! Our number one priority is to make sure our son is having fun so we will do some trendy videos once in a while ( of course as long as he wants too also) and more videos with him playing with whatever toys he pick or places he wants to go even thou we know those videos won't get as much views, it doesn't matter as long as he's having fun! He's at the point where he wants me to record him do everything because he thinks those people watching his videos are his friends! We also tried some "girls type toys" they don't do very well even for us so we tried to stick with a target boy audience from 3-5 years old. ( Some girls do watch but it's a small percentage I'm assuming compare to boys) It's just hard for YouTube to suggest your videos to other bigger channel if YouTube don't know what's your channel is about, so niche specific is important. Also try to do some videos that follow the trend in that niche while adding your own twist to it!

Again for the Vlog it's really up to you, if those are the type of videos you guys like doing then keep doing them! ( that's what's important) It might be a longer road to build an audience base, but those fan will be loyal to you once it happen!

I will try to let you know our analysis next time I'm on my computer! We are on a road trip this whole week. Take care and good luck on your channel! Please forgive all the mistyped, it's hard on my cell.

I think you're heading in the right direction! I see you got some good views on some of your hot wheels videos, so I would do more of that type and toy cars related videos! Then from time to time try something different and see how your subscribers like it, if it works continue! Like for us, we started with Thomas and Friends for a while, then we add in some Play doh (didn't do well starting out so we stop doing play doh for a while) then Easter was coming so we knew we had to do Easter eggs but somehow still should tie in Thomas and Friends (since it was pulling in the views at the time), so we did Easter egg hunt with Thomas and Friends. That took off for us so that's when we started doing eggs video. You can leave the fish tank video if you like, I don't think it matter much. Just moving forward do more similar type of videos![DOUBLEPOST=1480394767,1480394642][/DOUBLEPOST]

My son loves Funnel Vision! The dad has incredible energy!

Advice needed: Should girls toys and boys toys be mixed or on separate channels?

As it's easier to manage one channel, I don't want to confuse our viewers or YT algorithm with too much niches in toys.

The gender neutral toys are the big debate. Having a boy and girl I'm leaning towards giving them their own channels but one channel would be ideal for me doing everything on my own :)

I rely to your other post! Sorry I'm too lazy to retype lol
