YouTube is Removing Videos - Are You Affected?

I think very few "real" cartoons (aka made by studios) would make it now. Frozen certainly wouldn't. The new Pixar film Coco wouldn't make the cut either. Lion King? No. How to Train Your Dragon? Definitely not. Finding Nemo? The Emoji Movie? Hotel Transylvania, Beauty and the Beast? Nope, Nope and Nope. Harry Potter?! Um, no way.

I guess we're all going to be held to PBS standards. I'm not hating on public broadcasters, but their programs are a bit of a snoozefest. Good for tiny kids, but older kids want the commercial stuff that encompasses all their emotions. There's a reason why funny prank videos (and I mean the actual harmless ones by Toys and Funny Kids Surprise Eggs for example) had more views than Sesame Street.

I am a bit concerned about who gets to decide what's appropriate for other people's children. The US has a huge contingent of ultra-religious conservatives; do they get to decide what's inappropriate? Because we've even had comments about society "straying from Jesus" on videos about dinosaur facts. So who are these moderators and flaggers? Whose idea of "propriety" do we need to follow?[DOUBLEPOST=1511461348,1511461130][/DOUBLEPOST]Wow. It sounds like they wanted to keep their kids in swimsuits videos. That was the one thing they were really angry about. What the. Keep em all off YouTube.

I read that as they wanted to be able to do fun videos in their pools or at water parks. Not like creepy bath-time videos, just like, my kid has cooler toys than yours lol.[/QUOTE]
Yeah I just don't get the need to upload videos of my half naked kid in a pool or waterpark. Even if harmless, I don't see the need to monetize and earn money off a swimsuit video. Especially with the pedophilia explanation. Maybe that's just me. Seems like there are countless of other kinds of videos we can make.[DOUBLEPOST=1511462115][/DOUBLEPOST]
What about videos at the beach? Where do you draw the line?
Probably comes down to an individual human reviewer. I bet if the focus is more on the beach and activity and less on showing kids in swimsuits a human reviewer would probably approve. But yeah it would be hard to define. I bet for most part these swimsuit grey area videos will be ok once this elsagate blows over. It's just now everything is under microscope.

When I make videos in public or at beaches I try my best to avoid filming people since it's without their consent. Especially at beach since there's a lot of skin around. Don't want any accidental booties. Better safe than sorry.

I'm not exactly sure what you mean by the "pedophilia explanation", but if you're referring to Reddit. That's the same group that gave the world Pizzagate. They see sex/sexualization/pedophilia in everything. Make a video about a giant baby stomping around and you're suddenly a pedophile grooming children for some sort of weird sex fetish.

Or maybe, just maybe, changing scale is funny. I don't know how old you are, but I'm 32. I LOVED "Honey I Shunk the Kids". What would reddit make of that franchise?

Filming your kids at the beach, or not is your decision as their parent. :)
But to imply that children at the beach are some how inherently sexual or sexualized, is all sorts of icky.

And this is the problem YT is going to have monitoring the kids content. What I'm comfortable with, you may not be and vice versa. I'd bet a whole lot of people would be offended if I suggested that I was going to start tagging Christian homeschooling videos as child abuse or inappropriate content. Just like I think a ban on taking your family to the beach is ridiculous.

Hey guys, found very interesting stuff on the ElsaGate subreddit, basically a Russian YT network incorporating several toy channels (mostly in the Elsa & Spiderman niche) did a Q&A with the channel owners and there was an YT official representative answering questions during the session.

This might be very helpful in understanding which is the safest way to go in the future to avoid demonetization and the likes.

Note: I took the liberty to put in bold the parts I think might be the most interesting for the community

TRANSLATION:

3 (owner of the channel, name is "Anna"): "Today we will talk about new YT rules. Ask questions in chat."

1 (YT representative, name is "Liza"): "Kids content must be safe. This is the most important factor. Our algorithms are constantly getting better, and right now our kids content algorithms can detect bad content which is not safe for kids and their minds. This, of course creates a lot of confusion among content creators. But what is happening is very important for kids safety."

2 (YT representative, name is "Alina"): "Did the polices change? Not much, but they are not enforced better, and you may get your videos even deleted."

3: "Is there a list of what you can and cannot do?"

1: "There cannot be a list of these - you cannot show kids with weapons, with dangerous things, the list is too big. Basic rule - do not show what you wouldn't show your own kids."

2: "There can be no concrete list, because otherwise people will find ways to go around it. You need to pay attention if there are family characters doing inappropriate things, sexual, violent things, that it will most likely get banned. Context is also important - if this video is meant to scare a child, it's not ok. pay attention to thumbnails and intros, videos will be taken down if they are not suited for kids."

3: "Should we delete controversial videos, or will it be worse?"

2: "We do not recommend deleting content if it is strike, strike is not going anywhere anyway. You should appeal it. If you know that it was 100% violation of the rules, than you need to change your content overall and wait until strike goes away on it's own."

3: "Will we be punished for deleting controversial videos without strikes"

2: "No, you will not be punished for deleting non-striked videos."

2: "Deleteing videos will not result in ban of the channel, but you will need to change your content strategy."

1: "If you want to stay on YT, you should think about if your content is safe, and should be your unsafe content on your channel. My policy is making sure that all kids content is safe."

3: "If the channel is falsely accused and deleted, what should we do?"

2: "You can appeal that through Support Service, but you must be sure it was a mistake."

1: "I agree, you should appeal if this is an error, but we think that you have to be sure, you should check your videos for unsafe content."

3: "If a popular character in video does some tricks on a car, or people dress up as popular characters, is this ok?"

1: "Working with popular kids characters is complicated for copyright reasons - some studios are not happy when their characters like Spiderman are used in uncomfortable situations. We recomment to contact film studios and ask for permission to use characters. Because if the studio would not want the character can be used, you will be striked."

2: "We do not forbid you from dressing up as characters, but it must be safe for children. If the content is inappropriate for kids, it can get blocked. Check with monetization rules to see what content is ok."

3: "If some crazy guy dressed up as a spiderman comes to a child and he trusts him and get stolen, YT channel may be blamed. Everyone, be very careful not to teach kids wrong things. This can be dangerous."

2: "Video shouldn't show something that child can repeat and get hurt, avoid showing that."

3: "Chat is asking why all kids channels getting deleted?"

1: "Only bad channels that break rules are getting deleted. Good kids channels are fine."

3: "Question about challenges and pranks. How far can we go? Can we make videos of kids in swimming uniforms?"

2: "Again, there is no defined list, but check the rules. Also, it's not ok if you make children do something that they don't want to eat. Potential sexual content should not be shown, it will all be deleted."

1: "Ask youself if there is an abuse of children in the challenge video. If we see two kids being asked to eat a ton of candy, this is not ok, because it's dangerous for them, for their minds."

3: "Hey, chat. Why are striked videos deleted, we will discuss later, but not now."

3: "If this ok to invite child actors and make staged videos with them? Can they be playing some popular characters?"

1: "I cannot say yes or no. It all depends on the details of the story, of copyright rules for the characters. You need to look at the details."

2: "The same kids videos rules we discussed apply here too. if you wouldn't show this to your child, do not do it."

3: "Should one start a safe kids channel right now?"

1: "Yes, this is a time to start a SAFE channel, some pretty big bad channels will probably stop making videos now, so new creators should come."

2: "If your content is safe, nothing will stop you from having and promoting the channel."

3: "If there are 700 videos, but only 20 of them are bad, will the channel be in problems, or only videos?"

2: "Can't answer right now. It's individual. But if you get three strikes, the channel is gone, this rule stays. If channel is getting deleted, you can try to contact support service."

1: "It depends on how bad these 20 videos are. If they are really bad... Daily Mail and Buzzfeed made articles about horrible, horrible videos, with gore and blood, if you have something like that, your channel should not be on the platform."

3: "People in chat re asking about kids in swimsuits. Yeah, well if you are parents, you shouldn't show these videos, because you can get him in danger with pedophiles. Why would you show swimsuits, or poop, or blood, if you can do some family friendly content??? I understand you are all angry, but this is youtube, and it has rules. You must use your brain before you show this stuff to children! We will inform you, we will fight against false claims, stop panicing."

(chat was really angry that the swimsuits are banned now)

3: "What should we not show with [video] gaming content."

1: "We have a separate team which deals with gaming content. I will ask them for a detailed answer, but the same rules apply here. Kids should not be holding guns, be in agrressive situations. Especially this concerns online games."

2: "Rules for gaming are the same."

3: "Sadly we are running out of time, but I noted your questions about monetization, I will get answers for them too, I wrote them down. Thank you for your time, we will stay in contact."

1 and 2: "Goodbye."

Thanks for that!

Could it be they don't want skits with kids? Maybe they are thinking, there's so much room there, if they start allowing them they can escalate into different situations. I think they are cracking down on complete categories of videos they don't want. There is not much left. Major skit channels were removed, such as Vlad, even though their stuff was safe for the most part. It could be we end up with directives to make educational videos, family vlogs, nursery rhymes, toy unboxings, safe challenges, music and songs, and that's it. Of course any of those can warp into weird stuff quickly as well.

This may be true. YT don’t want child actors anymore. Like children being told what to do in front of the camera. They may be thinking that kids on camera must be as natural as possible and be themselves. Kids with genuine smiles in their faces and not scripted. That’s why unboxings and egg surprises were so popular back then because of genuine happiness from kids opening toys. True positive emotions. I think this is what’s going to happen. I remember one person saying don’t give kids money or clothes during special days like Christmas and birthdays, give them toys because it’ll put a smile on their faces. Imagine doing that in every video though it’s going to be a pain in the parents’ pocket. But a child’s smile? Priceless.

We may be a small channel here in this thread and we have not been hit...yet. But we’ve demonitized and private set our nerf videos and change t/t/d on some of our videos. To all that were affected, we’re deeply deeply sorry for what happened. On the bright side, our kids are safe and happy, and that’s what matters.

Keep posting. Let band together, hang on and survive this thing.

It's in the Q&A. In the same conversation about swimwear. The response from YouTube about kids in swimwear was to avoid pedophiles watching the content. (This is a rough summary for brevity. But it's mentioned in the Q&A)

And yes we're all different. I try to cut out any accidental crotch shots when my son and I are playing with toys on the floor. Even though he's fully clothed and it's harmless. It just bugs me personally. I am on that paranoia spectrum.

Learn Colors With got heaps of videos deleted, more than 1B views. Not sure if by themselves or YT.

Anyone has monetization disabled again like last night?

Yep, just woke up to it.
The funny thing is, we did not do any repeated submission, there was only 1 submission and it was green for a full day before the whole channel demonetization yesterday.
This is the first I heard of documentation requirements. What documentation?

Don't tell me they want Copyright clearances for all the toys we ever used - Disney Car, Thomas Barbie, various superheroes....

Thanks, hope it's a glitch like yesterday, not that I'm punished for requesting reviews on videos that got demonetized. Channel is still up and running though so that's good news.[DOUBLEPOST=1511471406,1511471326][/DOUBLEPOST]Just heard from someone else, they also got the same thing, and they haven't appealed a single thing over the last two weeks. So seems a glitch
