Massive drop in views on kid channels

FTC settlement with Google is out. $170 million dollar fine. The government has made an official finding that COPPA was violated. New York is also getting $34 million from Google. Google has agreed to set up a system that asks video channel owners to identify the children’s content they post.

YouTube said it would funnel $100 million to creators of children’s content over the next three years. It will also heavily promote YouTube Kids, its child-focused app, to shift parents away from using the main YouTube app when allowing their kids to watch videos.

For example, we recently raised the bar for which channels can be a part of YouTube Kids, drastically reducing the number of channels on the app. About time!

A very interesting quote coming from the FTC is, "sends a strong message to children’s content providers and to platforms about their obligation to comply with the COPPA rule." I hope in the future content providers are held accountable as well.

This is hugely ambigious and I cannot see how this will work in practice without being a total disaster - unless there is some kind of financial incentive for creators to do so. If voluntarily declaring your content is effectively is a pathway to being shoved into YT Kids and an ad revenue black hole, then nobody will willingly do this.

The biggest problem comes when defining 'children's content'. What if your content has appeal for both children, teens and adults? Lots of us make 'universal' content which can be enjoyed by all ages and goes beyond the nursery rhyme garbage. Will we be lumped in with this nonsense too?

I have been planning on this for years, all my videos, all 2800 of them are clean fun family friendly, no bad words, and no kids in them., they are all about toys for kids and having fun with kids toys. As of today not a single video is on the kids app..lol...I guess that means they are for kids above 13, or none of them passed the quality watch metrix, who knows, but it will be interesting to see how many millions I will get from the disbursement fund. This should be an interesting 4 months to say the least, My revenue is already down 99% since 2014, , so when it goes all the way to zero, all that will be left of my legacy is my 2800 creations for those to enjoy ad free...

And they are giving us 4 months to adjust to changes. What changes are we suppose to make?

From the mail that came from youtube:

In the meantime, please note you can choose to use the channel level settings that allow you to control certain features on your content. For example, you can disable personalized ads using your advanced settings in Creator Studio and disable comments on content on your channel(s).

Could this be an attempt to be more like network television? Where on TV you can have shows for children funded by commercials. Because isn’t that what you would try to do if you still want to have it all. I think the only difference between youtube and TV is the tracking and personalized commercials. Maybe take the intelligence out of Youtube and dumb it down so they capitalize on childrens content just like television? 100 million isnt nearly enough to replace all the kids channels. Especially all the big ones. It would be shocking if they decided to kill off cocomelon and ryantoysreview. Perhaps they are trying to convert those channels into television style advertising.
