Loving YTtalk
I think I have it figured out. All videos from everyone will still be on the YouTube. com platform as per usual but if you want your kids to watch videos on YouTube then you choose youtubekids.com and set up a filter which somehow will magically only show certain videos. All my videos were recently removed from the kids app although to me they were created for kids under 10...or 8 or 4 down to toddler. They are are all clean fun and kid friendly....really about pixar cars all cookie monster....but anyway....I wonder if I will even notice the difference in my views when this new website is activated. My guess is no. I expect we will see it launch tomorrow or over the weekend. Most of the staff are probably at burning man until next week so there could be a delay .. any thoughts? ?
Here is what we know. A huge part of the FTC complaint was that "YouTube cannot take advantage of the age gate exception because, although it requires registration to post videos, it does not require registration to watch videos on YouTube." It was documented that some Google executives recommended moving all kids content to the kids app; however many pointed out how unsuccessful the kids app has been. 81% of American kids watch Youtube so they can't afford to toss their platform down a hole with such a move. The FTC specifically responded to advocacy groups who filed the complaint by asking them if Youtube disabled ads on kids content would this fix the problem. The advocacy groups responded with no.
As someone that has extensive experience in interpreting regulatory statutes, I don't think Google can leave content clearly aimed at kids on the regular site and be COPPA complaint. Youtube has officially responded with the following quote, "Because YouTube is not for children, we’ve invested significantly in the creation of the YouTube Kids app to offer an alternative specifically designed for children.” With recent news of the web based kids version (I think this is brilliant), Youtube may finally have a solution to comply with the law. In order for this to work, Youtube can longer subscribe to the "don't ask don't tell" method of operation of pretending to claim that they don't allow kids under 13 to use main Youtube, yet they have nothing in place to prevent it. Obviously some things will slip through the cracks, but I think you are going to see a major change. Here is the deal. Youtube doesn't need 15,000 kid content creators. There are only so many views to go around and kids are going to watch what is available. The only channels that have any real value, are channels that have an actual brand where it is worth money outside of Youtube. All of this stuff from Russia and Asian countries do not have any real value outside Youtube. Youtube obviously can't manually go through every channel and pick a curated list. It violates a core principle of Youtube being an open platform. What will likely happen instead, is a natural process of elimination. Once kids content is restricted to the kids side, ad revenue will plummet. Many channels will disappear and will try to capitalize on the next get rich quick scheme. The channels left will be making content primarily motivated by a passion to make these videos and a desire to build a legitimate brand that is worth money outside the Youtube platform. Obviously, I can't guarantee it will play out like this, but it is the path that makes the most sense to me. We also have to realize that this is the same company that allowed videos of pregnant Elsa and Spiderman to proliferate for over two years before they did anything so really anything is possible with this company.
