The question I have , is how is youtube going to decide what videos fall into each age group ... most of mine are geared at kids under 8 , but how will they know that ?

Will you still be able watch kid videos on regular youtube besides web based kids app?
 
This seems like a very good step in the right direction. As I had previously predicted, Google has to implement an age gate as it is the only possible solution to comply with the law. The big question will be how does the age gate work. Most kids roam Youtube without even the slightest parental guidance. Will the age gate ask for a date of birth to be entered or will it simply be a yes or no. Obviously the date of birth option will actually work better because most young children won't be able to understand how to lie to avoid being redirected to the kids version. If it is just a yes or no question, the age gate will be pointless. Also what about the kids that watch while signed into their parents or other adult account. If the account is signed in, it won't prompt the age gate.

There is also the question of whether all kids content gets moved over to the kids version. I think this is the only option if you want to ensure that all kids under 13 use the kids version. You need to provide an incentive for the kid or parent to choose the kid version.

I am extremely excited about this. Either way this is going to get rid of a lot of problem creators that dominate the algorithm unfairly. Best part is, apparently the changes are coming tomorrow or Friday.
 
What’s to be excited about? It’ll be less traffic. I understand targeted ads but content was not the problem. Someone needs to audit congress and FTC for stupid laws they pass and how much gun companies pay them not to change gun laws.
 
I think I have it figured out. All videos from everyone will still be on the YouTube. com platform as per usual but if you want your kids to watch videos on YouTube then you choose youtubekids.com and set up a filter which somehow will magically only show certain videos. All my videos were recently removed from the kids app although to me they were created for kids under 10...or 8 or 4 down to toddler. They are are all clean fun and kid friendly....really about pixar cars all cookie monster....but anyway....I wonder if I will even notice the difference in my views when this new website is activated. My guess is no. I expect we will see it launch tomorrow or over the weekend. Most of the staff are probably at burning man until next week so there could be a delay .. any thoughts? ?

They most likely took several videos from private to unlisted. Probably really popular videos that got demonetized and got caught up in the previous clean up. They want their total views to still reflect the views from those videos so they make them unlisted. It takes a few hours to a day for Google to start counting the views again. It shows up as new views for the day.
