Letterbox why??

Why are music videos on YouTube LetterBoxed? Not all are but recent ones I've seen created by YouTubers are. Here is a picture to show you what I mean.

LetterBox is only for if the video doesn't fit the frame right? Am I missing something. Should I be doing this or is this only an option? Just was curious.

I believe high-end cameras record in a different aspect ratio. Some people may also add black bars in editing to give it more of a movie feel.

I see, Never knew about the High End Camera thing. To make it seem more like a movie makes sense. I prefer it just being full screen unless you needed text to be on the black bars for annotations
