What makes a thumbnail good?

I do all of that. actually my comp died just before starting all this and i lost photoshop. so thats why i have not even made a banner. i just found a sight i love for thumbs called befunky.com just started using it. its lets you do so much on it!

We use a similar site called Fotor which has been really helpful!
 
I'd like to think my past few thumbnails have been pretty decent as I get better with every video I make. I use Photoshop CS6 to make them and once you get acquainted with the software it becomes pretty caked. I'd say if you have writing on your thumbnail, make sure the font is pretty ( not just a normal default font ), i'd hugely recommend dafont.com to find a good one. Then for images it really comes from looking around seeing what big youtubers in your category thumbnails look like and reflecting that upon your thumbnail. This doesn't mean copy it, but use it as a sort of "let me make mine look as clean as this" if you know what I mean. Hopefully that helped.

If you can find a layout that looks overall good amongst your videos and its specific to you and represents your channel then do it. Tbh I really don't think people should have name of video in thumbnail. It takes away from some of them where as without the words you can make a colorful and beautiful thumbnail! :)
 
What I personally do for mine is always have a sign of my channel art in there, either my character or some attributes like his hat and such!
Apart from that I like to have a few words that really POP out in your face to make the thumbnails as "clickalicious" as possible! :)
