What Are YOUR Thoughts on "Self-Promotion"?

So, what I mean by self-promotion is when people go around on other people's channels with the sole purpose being to promote their own content/channel. Personally, I'd say I'm a big advocate against this and whenever I ask any of my friends and acquaintances, who are also YouTubers, there seems to be a massive amount of dislike, close to hatred, for the practice. However, there is one example (Not going to give any names) of someone I knew who was strongly against this BUT when his channel wasn't growing as fast as he'd hoped, he started spamming comment sections with self-promotion.

It was quite interesting to see to be honest and I'm just curious what people on YTTalk's opinions are. Don't worry, I'm reserving judgement, this is just for discussion purposes and I ask for anyone who disagrees with one another discuss it as opposed to simply insulting anyone :)

Yep you know the difference between a 100% genuine comment and a "nice video, come and check out my channel" type comment and it just gives me the impression that you haven't watched the video and only want me to subscribe to your channel. :)

I think it is very bad that some Youtubers do this which I have made the same mistake for a while not on YouTube but on Twitter basically I was following lots lots of people even in my niche and DM(Direct Message) them to check out my channel/videos and subscribe to me after a year of doing this even tho I gained over 3K subscribers on my YouTube channel by doing this on Twitter at the end this turned out to be very bad then good for my channel basically most of the people that subscribed to me was dead subscribers which means they are not interested in watching my videos and only subscribe to me because I told them to and after I finally realised that the thing that I was doing on Twitter to get subscribers/people to my YouTube channel was very bad and wasting most of my time where I could of make a lot more better enjoyable videos, So afterwards i did stop doing it on Twitter and which I did not want to get on my YouTube channel in the 1st place!

I actually WANT a great audience subscriber fan base that ALWAYS WANT to watch my videos and leave 100% genuine comments on my videos, interacting with me as REAL/TRUE subscribers/fans and sharing my videos to there friends on social media and CURIOUSLY waiting for my next video! :)

So that is pretty much the main reason that I have created a new channel and starting completely fresh on YouTube, I want to do YouTube and promote my channel the RIGHT WAY(Making YouTube videos consistently, collab and make friends with Youtubers and let people FIND your channel or video in the search results, suggested videos and promote when it's appropriate and acceptable and of course there's a lot more)! :)

Anyway but what about this?? I think if you are watching the Youtuber videos and leave 100% genuine comments on there videos for a while then I think it is completely ok to ask them to check out your channel and videos!!

If that wasn't the sole reason for which you subscribed to the person and have been active on their channel I'd say there isn't much harm in it.. However, when there's another YouTuber who is active in my comment sections and genuinely enjoys my content I often check out their channel anyway so there's really no need for it at the end of the day. Personally, I don't think I could really bring myself to do that though. I'm a pretty big supporter of this YouTuber called Mantrousse who has 300k+ subs for example, he also follows me on Twitter and I moderate his livestream's chat. But even with all of that and the occasional conversation I have with him, I wouldn't ask him to check out my channel as I'd expect that he'd decide for himself if he wanted to do so. I don't know, maybe other people in my position would but I personally don't xD

I agree I kinda like when someone brings it to my attention to check out their channel. I am cool with that.I love looking at peoples channels. Especially funny ones. Some of these guys make me laugh, I really enjoy the creativity and everybody has to start somewhere

Most of the time I see self promotion comments on my own channel they are in the SPAM box. YouTube does a pretty darn good job on that for an automated system. Those that do make it through I delete. When I see it on other channels I just ignore it. It rubs me the wrong way, and probably everyone else who is serious about their YouTube channel as well. Guess what? If you have to ask for it you're not worth it.

It all comes back to the age old: If you got it they will flock and if you don't they don't. Asking people to flock to your channel is like asking warm weather birds to fly north... into a blizzard...

I have never been tempted to check out someones channel because of a spam comment so I can't imagine it works very well at getting anything other than hate. Not to mention it's annoying and presumably against YouTube's terms of service.

That said I think it's pretty clear from my channel name that I make videos, so I am hopeful I can get a few clicks from commenting without the comments asking people to check out my channel.

Quick question I must be thinking of the wrong thing like not people saying "like click subscribe" Bc that's what I'm thinking am I missing it what's an example

An example would be someone who comes out of the blue onto your channel, often doesn't even watch the video or leave a like but comes for the sole purpose of promoting their own channel. That's basically what we're talking about.[DOUBLEPOST=1463568744,1463568412][/DOUBLEPOST]

Yeah, I mean, more often that not, you can tell which channels in a comment section make YouTube videos since they usually have a custom profile pic that either, says the name of the channel (like in my case) or has a caricature or edited photo of them (like in your case).

Yeah that's what I was thinking as well.

I have had Youtubers check out my channel and sometimes subscribed to me without me asking them after I posted a (or a couple)genuine comments on there videos after watching them. :)

And if a YouTuber is leaving genuine comments on my videos and enjoys watching my videos then I check out there channel and maybe subscribe ONLY if I like watching there videos!
