What Are YOUR Thoughts on "Self-Promotion"?

I don't think it's ever really appropriate to advertise your own channel on other's people's comments section without their permission.

However I do think it's important to practice self promotion in one way or another if you do want to grow as a YouTuber. You can't just sit there and hope to attract viewers out of nowhere.

You could make some of the best content on YouTube, but if nobody will see it, what is it really worth? So advertisting yourself in some ways is important to get some kind of exposure to reach growth.

But I agree that it's disrespectful to do it in comments sections.

i honestly believe some self-promotion is okay, if you are just starting out , how is anyone really going to find you or even know who you are. Like a good sales man you try to "sell yourself" to the customer. The self promotion that people just randomly come on forums or social media and ram their links and videos and spam you with it with no care at all is not right. Would you buy something from someone in a store if they charged at you swinging a random item in your face saying "buy this now" "hey buy now" you would run out of the store fast. That is bad self promotion. Thats just my opinion.

I believe that, if self-promotion is done in a certain area that accepts it ie. subreddits about "Self-promotion" for example are completely acceptable, if that's what people are looking for then that's all good to be honest. If you are to do it in places where it's not welcome however, for me, it's 100% a no go.[DOUBLEPOST=1463280218,1463280032][/DOUBLEPOST]

Only "Self-Promotion" I've done (Honestly, I'm not even sure if this fits the criteria) is entering a shoutout competition and, up until that point, I was at 392 subs, reached 600 within the next 2 or 3 days from the shoutout. So, overall, I think if it's a place where it's accepted and filtered in some way (so not to make it spam) it's all good.

I think the general consensus on these forums for self-promoting in other people's comments is pretty bad and I agree with that. It's a good sign though that you are perceived by some as being "good enough" to promote in so that's a good takeaway!

I have to admit that I once self-promoted off YouTube in the past. Much of the self-promotion was turned away or backlashed back then. Now is not the case; I've stopped self-promoting, but there's some smaller channels that come to my channel and say stuff like "Great video, come check out my channel," sometimes adding "I play this game too!" I've been annoyed at it so much that I've wanted to make a video addressing the issue and providing the examples that I've received since the end of PAX East.

I just don't have enough examples yet. However, I'm glad that much of this self-promotion is going into my spam section.

When I started making YouTube videos, the one thing I told myself not to do is to beg for views because it's the dumbest possible thing that you can do. I reply to all of my comments, but whenever I see a spam one where it asks me to "check out my youtube channel" or "sub4sub", I cringe a little. Anyone that has to resort to this probably has a really bad channel, and it makes him or her look bad.
Its essentially the equivalent of a 40 year old white guy saying
"Peep my mixtape"

Any self promotion telling people to "Check me out " automatically makes me think your channel and content are s**t[DOUBLEPOST=1463461975,1463461836][/DOUBLEPOST]
I've gotten a handful of people messaging me through GMAIL asking me to check them out.

They are evolving
Lmao
My email is currently filled with
"JOIN MY SUBNETWORK ITZ DA BEST I SWAR"

I think when people go campaigning for subscribers they put themselves in a position where their subscribers have only joined because they asked, not because they actually enjoy the content they're viewing. I think it just breeds ghost followers and it's hard to gain an actual following from it. I personally just ignore when people comment their links on my videos. I'd much rather connect with people instead of being sold something right off the bat. (That being said.... you should TOTALLY check out my channel haha)

Exactly like I get some people actually are underrated (I think I'm underrated but it's not really up to me tbh) but the majority either don't know what good content is or just don't care

Also have watched some of your videos before and you guys are really entertaining and your channel is niche perfection

I also find that a lot of their followers end up asking them for shoutouts and sub4sub, they rarely care about the person's content, they all just end up sub4subing for eternity lol.
