Facebook banned in Russia? Russia will soon ban Facebook for rusian users if Facebook does not open or move its servers to Russia. Russian laws demand that all Russian users data must be stored in Russia. Russian Facebook Ban, Facebook ban Russia, Russia block facebook.

Facebook could be blocked in Russia if the country decides to enforce one of its bizarre laws. In 2015 Russia enacted a new law which states personal data of Russian citizens must be stored on Russia. Obviously social networks store personal data on people, which means Facebook would have to create servers in Russia to hold their Russian users’ details.

LinkedIn has fallen victim to this law, refusing to host their Russian users’ data on Russian-based servers, and consequently being blocked in the country. Twitter has agreed to move their Russian users’ data onto servers in Russia by 2018 in order to keep operating in the country.

Alexander Zharov, the head of Russia’s communications watchdog Roskomnadzor, has quietly been rolling the law out, and it is thought he might target Facebook next.
He told state-run news agency Interfax: ‘Facebook has a substantial audience in Russia, but it is not a unique service.’ He added that ‘the law is mandatory for everyone’.

The timing of Zharov’s words have brought the law to many people’s attention, as a few days ago Facebook announced it would release data on propaganda adverts that were uploaded to the site during the US election, and that allegedly originated from Russia.

The company said last month that it had found many adverts with divisive and inflammatory political content during the 2016 election were linked to Russian accounts.

Russian officials have always denied any involvement in trying to influence the results of last year’s election.

Experts say Facebook will probably comply with the law and start using Russian-based servers. The social network has been banned in China since 2009, so industry insiders believe the company will not want to lose revenue from another large country.
