My Setup.

I'm not exactly sure, We use FCP at college on medium spec'd 27" iMacs and it really takes for ever to do anything :/
If it has under 8 GB of RAM, that's why. If you really want to use Final Cut effectively, get 16 GB of RAM. It's fairly cheap under $130 bucks at Tiger Direct

I did check and it does have 8GB RAM. The videos we edit are pretty small too, about a gig for the whole thing.

Do you guys straight export? I advise against it. Use the app Compressor. It renders it out slower but the files end up as like a half a GB or less

Another tip - OSX can be a bit of a hog about releasing memory when it's supposed to. If you open up the terminal and run "purge", it can free up some memory that's being held ransom by the operating system. Definitely helps me out whenever I'm encountering some FCP slowness.

Also, closing browsers. I swear there's still a memory leak in Flash players...

This. When running FCP I advise shutting everything down unless you truly need it. I close Chrome and I double the speed.

Fact for those of you out there. The new safari on Mountain Lion is so faulty that it makes my 2009 MBP Kernel Panic from time to time. Close it unless you're using it.
