Making Money...

It depends on the genre. Our channel needed a large cash investment financed through a Visa card at 17%. Seeing the interest payments every month is not very joyful.

I think there should be a mix of business sense and craft involved, unless one lives in their parents basement with all bills, rent and food provided and the washing neatly folded by Mom.

There seems to be this negative connotation about the words "YouTube" and "money". Why is that? It is truly the very fortunate person who does not need any money to survive. Most of us with kids and families and bills need to make money or go find a bridge and a large cardboard box to live under.

If someone doesn't want to make money, it's very easy to turn off monetization!
Heya @KiddieToysReview, I think there's three types of people on youtube:

1) People expecting the money train to arrive as long as they upload crap regularly (they might think their content is super though).
2) Entrepreneurs who join Youtube to start a business (making a living out of it) or support a business (e.g consultants generating customers through their channel). Don't mistake these people as not having heart for youtube, they love it but making profit has to go hand in hand with creating content.
3) Artists & entertainers who want to do something creative and make a buck with it in the process (probably with a dream to get viral one day and do it for a living)

The people on the forum seem to be:
- A lot of type 3
- Some of type 1 claiming they are 3
- Many in group 1 (creating a few posts only) looking for a magic formula to become big within two weeks
- Some of type 2 (e.g Tim Schmoyer or yourself)

Love to hear how other people view this.

You see that door? Go trough it. Money is like fight club. You don't talk about fight club. It is the #1 ticket to purgatory. If you are about the money you don't belong on YouTube. YouTube is for those with passion for creating. That can lead to money. There is no YouTuber that I know of that hates doing their YouTube job. They all love it. Because they started something from zip and it turned into something big. Those that start with threads like these? Fail. Miserably. 99.99999% of the time.
Couldn't have said it better myself. Also that fight club reference cracked me up, great reply, haha.

(@Rhys) Find what you love doing and make a channel around it, then, with some consistency, you'll find success. Going into it for money isn't going to work at all. Sorry to sound harsh but it's the truth.
