Is Youtube Success Just Luck?

I think going Viral takes a bit of luck. And the best way to give your content legs to stand on so it has a higher chance of getting viewed more/going viral would be to get your content in as many places as you can all over the web. We are starting to see "Social Media Stars" that are blowing up on a multitude of platforms and it's really smart. I think the days of just solely doing YouTube are going to start to dwindle.

While going viral takes a bit of luck, I do believe you can become successful on YouTube just with hard work. If you're consistent in quality and consistent in distribution, I think you will continue to grow.. It will just be a slow rise.

It's a bit of luck and a bit of hard work. Mostly hard work. I think the luck factor plays in if you get a viral video because those are all pure luck. Getting your fan base etc... thats hard work.

Luck can definitely help, but along with hard work you need a lot of smarts. If you make the best video ever and fail to use proper SEO then you'll probably never get recognized. But yes most of it in my opinion is hard work.

It's only luck if you don't know what your doing, or how you did it.

There is some luck, such as being the first to discover a new topic, but there's lots of smarts and hard work involved

Anyone who resigns themselves to saying it's pure luck, just hasn't come to reckon that they have no ability or drive for the long haul it takes to build a following

Weeks, months ago, I would have said luck is maybe 5%. 95% is seo, hard work, quality, etc.

Today, I would say luck is 90%. The rest is hard work.

Time to hit the flea markets and load up on rabbit tails and horseshoes and whatever else tickles the funny bone.

I think no.
I kinda change my mind. Rather than no completely, I say yes, definitely need a lot of luck.

Without luck, yea, you'll grow with hard work. Just very slow. I'm talking 2,3,4 or even 5 years with still <100k subs and <30k views per day.

So, if youtube success = getting subs, views and money quick, yes you need luck. If youtube success = getting good subs, views and money one day then you don't need luck just hard work. But if you suddenly get lucky and have done hard work, the success would last longer is what I believe.

I changed my answer coz I just saw a channel that grew quickly that's pretty generic (not bad, not really good, just generic af) and their tags consisted of single word tags that isn't ranked anywhere, their top videos doesn't even seem to have searchable titles. I checked their overall stats per video and it showed a pretty average retention time as well.

I believe they got lucky and found a way to promote their channel somehow or the youtube algorithm just suddenly favored them, somehow.

That's a really big flip in ratio. Do you feel like you're massive growth was mostly luck? Cuz 90% luck does not sound very encouraging :(

Youtube success is more like Poker. There's definitely an element of luck involved but there's an even bigger element of skills as well. There's a lot of factors like the niche you're in, the quality of your videos, your promoting skills, understanding SEO, how consistent you are, how good you're at predicting trends and so on.

OMG I LOOOOVE this analogy!!! That is exactly how I see this Youtube Game. Reason why I call it the "Youtube Game".
Of course there is a factor of luck, but you raise your chances of winning, by being knowledgeable of the system.
I am just starting off my channel and I am glad I am doing so at this time in YT.

Why?

Because of this new system. I have not yet experienced in full the old system and since this new one is literally weeding people out. Those who work and adapt and understand that YT is not to blame....will prevail.

With that, let us learn the new card game, master it, and play it with as much caution as you would with....poker.
