Hi creators!

As we all know, gaming has been super saturated on YouTube ever since people knew this beautiful platform existed. But I'm starting to feel like it's getting worse and worse. There are tens of thousands of Let's Play and Gameplay channels out there. This is due to the fact that making these videos (relatively to other video subjects) is easy, takes very little time and most people are into gaming to begin with.

So my question to you is, is there still room for new ones?

Another trend that I'm noticing is that gaming channels are putting more and more effort into their videos. This is to differentiate themselves from the competition. For dudes like me it can be interesting to also consider this.

So a sub-question would be, do you think it's necessary for Let's play and Gaming channels to (overhaul/rethink their channels and) start editing more (in a more Funny Moments trend) to have a chance at entering YouTube?

Looking forward to your replies. Thanks everybody!

Kind regards,

James

Gaming channels basically only grow if you get a shoutout from another big gamer or somehow have content that's SO much better than the current niche (so like, if a community around a specific game doesn't really have any good creators in it). Also, meme videos, but those are more viral hits and you won't build a sustainable audience.

It's very, very difficult to grow normally. The barrier of entry is insanely low now so you get drowned in a sea of the same kind of content unless you try very hard to differentiate yourself.

Was thinking the same. There are soooo many gaming channel it's unreal. Mostly because people are motivated by gamers like Markaplier, Pewds, another guys I don't know much of them, because they see how far you can get, just by playing games.
I was making gaming videos and I thought I gotta stop. Don't get me wrong, I was enjoying it. But right now, it's the thing of youtube, no matter how good the video you gonna make you won't get the views. I was trying so hard and right now, even if you have basically the same quality video like Pewdiepie, you'll get 1k views top.
So I started to do vlogs, it's something new for me and I really really enjoy to edit it. The idea of me doing vlogs is not only to entertain people, but also to have memories. I'm not the one of 8 people who remembers every second of their life. (sadly?) :D That's why I started to make vlogs so I can remember exact moment when and where I was. Also I want to improve my English :up2:
I'm sorry, I've got a little off topic. Anyways.. Ya, it's hard and I think it's gonna be harder and harder.

I also believed that a shoutout would be the only way, but I was told that's just an excuse. And I don't like those haha. Then again, I see hardly any new YouTube gamers that are growing without a shoutout. Most of the successful ones do very high quality gaming videos, with lots of editing, and that's why they are able to differentiate and receive shoutouts. If anything this is more reason for YouTubers like myself to spend more time editing and more away from just gaming with jump cuts.

Good for you that you started something else! But then again, vlogging is becoming so extremely popular as well. It could very well end up like gaming, although perhaps not as bad, but vlogging has the same appeal to creators as gaming. Relatively easy, and fast to produce on a daily basis. Again, the people that spend time editing their stuff to make it stand out are the ones growing.

  1. The games is secondary, your personality / jokes and demeanor is the primary reason they'll sub to you...unless you do guides/tips

Right! But I find it extremely hard to measure if my personality for example would be good enough. I think other games on YouTube, at least I can imagine, don't have a good image of themselves. How do you measure what your target audience might think of your personality (if you don't receive much feedback at all).

Strongly doubt, unless you do something extremely specific or that rely on a very unique gimmick.

Just be yourself really - YT isn't cut out for everybody, it's an entertainment world...you won't see mono-tone (unless on purpose) not funny...just straight boring people being BIG on YouTube...you just won't. Like the entertainment business you gotta be funny/cool and yes different, how? who knows--- you just gotta fit the mold to an extent.

I thing you can still grow a gaming channel on YouTube.Just you need to showcase your talent. In a gaming video the most important part is commentary. If you know how to make people laugh by using your commentary & how to make your video interesting I thing still you can grow your channel. But obviously it's going to take a lot of hard work.So best of luck mate :)

I voted for, "Yes, but it's not easy". You have to get lucky especially if you don't commentate, but it is possible. There are many very popular gameplay-only channels out there and they are my inspiration since I'm not that big of a fan of commentary.

Gotta be lucky in how people find you dude and you GOTTA have a unique personality that will want people to come just to watch you not your actual gaming :)
