Is gaming TAKING OVER youtube?!?!?

@@MF Patrick mmmmmm This is a gray area for me. It's like that argument people make with movie types and a person preferring the summer blockbuster over a movie that won an oscar. It's vastly unfair to say that everyone who watches pewd is of a certain type of mental capacity or age. I watch informational gaming channels to be informed and I watch pewds to be entertained.

I think Seinfield and his observational humor is brilliant but sometimes I prefer Katt Williams and his ghetto persona. Everyone has different tastes, one isn't better than the other it is just different.

I think 2001 space odyssey (after repeated viewings) is the most overrated dreck I have ever seen in my life, and get crushed every time I say that. I also think Transformers and Michael Bay are an awesome combo.

90/10 split folks. 90% promo and ******* urself. 10% making vids. If you do 90% production and little promo ur screwed cuz of bigger channels

It's not easy to gain subscribers from gaming; the fact that it's so popular makes it hard to succeed in the YouTube gaming world. Gaming has been the most popular genre for YouTubers to upload for a while now, but I don't think it is "taking over YouTube". Vlogs, sketches, animation, etc are all very popular. Infact, gaming might start to die off a bit in the foreseeable future as more and more people start to realize how hard it is to actually maintain, build, and grow a gaming channel.
I hope this happens soon so I can snatch up all the subscribers in the world! >=D

I get really bored with most gamers on YouTube to be honest... They either
:shifty2: Are too focused on the game leading to long bouts of silence, constant umming or lost trains of thought.
:shifty2: Have relatively bland personalities and just make the whole experience droll.
:shifty2: Are extremely boisterous (like... more boisterous than me... which is an extremely scary thought). The boisterous ones tend to have cutting voices that split my brain in two and make it very difficult for me to concentrate on what they're doing.
:shifty2: Any of the above points are especially prominent when the conversation they're having with themselves is so random and separate from the game content that there's just no use paying attention.
:shifty2: And overall; unless they're going to spoof it, make it worth my time or teach me something about the game... I'd rather watch voiceless montages or play the game myself.

But enough about me being some grumpy old goat! :stomp:

I will say that as a niche, it can be very interesting! When the diamonds in the rough shuffle to the topsoil, they bring light and a certain vibrancy to the community! The problem comes when there is such a violent flood of garbage and droll trash being dumped into the niche because it's considered to be an easy genre to get into. I've seen bad vlogging, but I've seen worse gaming... And I should know! I made an isht ton of both in the past! Don't get into it because you think it's easy... get into it because you love it... LOVE IT... and because you feel like you actually have something to contribute or share.

Yah. I know. My opinion is :poop:

@MF Patrick Wow. I didn't expect anyone to take my post that seriously. Again, I don't know a ton of about gaming channels.
However, I have been on YouTube since 2008 and in that time I have seen gaming grow exponentially on YouTube.
There is a YouTube network called Freedom and I noticed a lot of people in their network were small gaming channels run by teenagers. So I watched some of them and through that found more small gaming channels where kids who had no idea how to play the game and the audio was bad. I'm just noticing now, that I only watched really big gaming channels (1 million subs+) and really small amateur gaming channels (under 300 subs), nothing in-between. So compared to the amateur teenagers I watched it was clear why PewDiePie was more popular then a 15 year old with horrible audio and no personality trying to be PewDiePie. I guess I just assumed that all smaller gaming channels were horrible because most of the ones I watched were. I don't know that much about gaming and I failed to look at medium sized gaming channels and maybe some of them would have good content. Again, I don't know very much about gaming but I could tell that PewDiePie was really good at commentating, at least compared the other gamers I watched.
As for the whole career thing, all I said is I personally find it weird that people want to play video games as full time job. I never said it wasn't allowed or people shouldn't want to be a gamer. However, in my opinion I think it is weird to aspire to play video games for a living. But that might just be because I don't play video games often. I know some people might disagree with me and that is okay. I have no problem with someone wanting to make a living or actually making a living paly video gaming. Just the idea of aspiring to play video gaming for a living sounds a little bit weird to me. To me, sitting in chair playing video games ten hours a day would get boring really quick. One of the others reasons I find it werid is because I didn't think there was anything you could do besides YouTube. So thank you for pointing out that there are tournaments and sponsors.
I really don't want to get into a big argument over this. Obviously you have a lot more knowledge of the gaming industry then me but, I am still allowed to have my own opinions.
I wasn't trying to be rude or anything.

Well, the quality thing could be said about vloggers, comedians or any other cathegory on Youtube. I mean, you watched someone who just started and tried to compare them to the biggest channel on Youtube. It's obvious that the guy with the biggest channel on Youtube will have better equipment. But if you watch someone who decided to commit to Youtube, you will find good audio-video quality, better commentary and in general better content.
The thing is, you said you saw small gamers not being able to play their games and they had terrible audio quality.
Well, PewDiePie is the same thing but he has good equipment.

And I don't see a difference between making a living while playing videogames and having a job in some kind of office.
I'm an architect and I spend most of my work time in front of a PC. And I do it 6-8 hours a day. Where is the difference between me and the professional gamer? Well, the difference is that if he's good, he earns a lot more than me ( this year's International had a $10M prize pool. The winner won 5M. ).

To make a living as a gamer on Youtube doesn't require 10 hours a day. If you are a professional gamer, well in that case it is possible. You need to practice and get better in order to win and earn your daily bread. As a Youtuber you need 2 hours tops + the editing process. And in 2 hours you can produce 2 hours of content which can be split into 20 minutes long episodes and that means 6 episodes. In 2 hours of recording you have enough content for 1 week (obviously this depends on your uploading schedule)...

And yeah, you can have your own opinion and I have nothing to say about that.
I just wrote down a few facts that some people don't know and they should know them before making their opinion.[DOUBLEPOST=1408699454,1408698232][/DOUBLEPOST]

See, 2001 Space Odyssey is really overrated. It's a great movie but people give it way too much credit. Transformers is a good series full of special effects and stuff but the comparison with PewDiePie is non-existent.

Transformers is a movie ( I saw only the first 2 if I remember right) that targets families, kids, teens and people who want to watch a movie just to kill some time. But it is a high quality production. It's not original and and it doesn't bring anything new to the game but still, it can be entertaining ( and it features Megan Fox so a lot of people will watch the movie just because of that).
PewDiePie is a 25 ( I don't know his age, I'm just guessing ) years old man acting like a 12 years old with brain damage. All he does is screaming random f**k, d**k, boobs and a** here and there, he's terrible at playing videogames and his commentary is non-existent because it's just him screaming random s**t.

Tell me, how can that be entertaining for more than 1 minute for someone who doesn't need to hide from their parents to say the word "f**k" ? Or is past that age when a bad word was funny to hear ?
To be honest, when I saw his videos for the first time I was like "Who's this retard and why is he acting like that?". After 2 minutes I was done with him.
It's not entertaining, it's not informative, it's not funny, it's just low quality and low effort content.
Again, a 12 years old kid will laugh for days watching PewDiePie. A mature person will not.
That's just my opinion and obviously you can have yours but I don't find PDP funny or anything like that.
I just don't think that a mature person will start and giggle because someone said "f**k".

Actually gaming content is very confined on YouTube. For example when I search for certain keywords I never got gaming videos even though the keyword is present in the tags or even in the title of this videos. If I go to similar Chinese video sharing website they will give me indiscriminately all kind of videos including many gaming one. The reason is that YouTube has my profile and the Chinese website does not so YouTube can keep away from ordinary users all the gaming videos quite well.

Ok obviously i was a little dramatic with the title but.... I really would love some feed back and your thoughts on this. So the way I see it many channels now are affiliated with or are completely gaming related. I've also met a few people who just make gaming videos because its a popular niche and easy to gain subscribers from. As a travel channel I have pride in my channel and the small travel community that exits on youtube and feel like SO MANY people like an unfathomable amount of people all ages have started making gaming related youtube videos. DISCLAIMER I don't want to come off as someone who hates gaming or doesn't appreciate it. I used to be a huge gamer before going on a little mind state change and I watch many gaming channels Like Syndicate Captain Sparklez and I love my occasional Pewdiepie. It just a feel like its really overwhelming. I do respect the fact that so many people of so many ages are taking the opportunity to do something they love and upload videos to Youtube in the first place. SO please tell me your thoughts on this! Im really interested to know what other people think. Gaming channel Perspective and all ;)

The fact that video gaming is already a digital medium, that recording it as part of a video experience is a natural progression. It is relatively easy to put together (after you gain some experience) and a side-project to the activity you already enjoy.

@MF Patrick honest to God moment I did smile when you put f+++ in quotations. Your thumbnail is awesome and it just kind of flowed well with what you were saying LOL

But point proven on your end :D

I realize now that I should have watched some medium sized gamers. I just don't know of any. YouTube is full of gamers who small channels commenting on other channels and the big channels are easy to find. I just didn't know where to look for mid size gamers who have good content.
I think even PewDiePie himself is confused why he has so many subscribers, it is not like not started YouTube to be a millionaire. And I feel like PewDiePie doesn't scream as much in his newer videos, but I could be wrong because I didn't watch too many of his videos. I do get what you saying about being an architect, all I'm saying is to me spending hours a day on a computer is not a job for me. I can't play video games for more then 30 minutes without giving up or getting bored, but I know tons of people who could play for hours. But thanks for telling me all this, again it is clear you know a lot more about the gaming industry then I do.
