Do shout-outs really help that much?

I once got featured on WeSauce. I went to sleep, woke up the next morning, and as usual, I checked my mail on my iphone, when suddenly, "Downloading 80 e-mails". Got a butt-ton of subscribers from it, so yes, it helps ^^.

Shout-0uts should be a natural part of your presentation. In other words, if somebody posts an interesting comment, it would be nice to give them a shout-out. Shout-out videos just for the sake of shout-outs are annoying.

Oh. Thanks for the answer guys! I wonder what will happen if my channel been promoted by popular channels. My inbox will be full by "______ just subscribed you" :D

I Believe that was his name, yes.

It's weird to find a thread about yourself. Hmmm. Very shortly after the shoutout MTD gave me I stepped away from youtube, so my channel hasn't grown much since I stepped away. However, after the shoutout he gave me I went from 4,000 subs to 20,000 in 30 days. I'm not sure why you would say that isn't substantial growth from a shout out. Anyway, there are the numbers.

This is why I support "shout out for shout out" over "sub for sub" any day. Like seriously why is "sub for sub" the thing people do and talk about when "shout out for shout outs" make SO much more sense....

Well when you have 10 subscribers and you are desperate to grow then sub4sub can help you double the size of your sub base rather easily. Whenever you come to anything of a larger scale then it no longer makes sense. When you have a decent following (around 500-1000 subscribers) and you have something to offer, then shout outs are definitely a good way to go.

I have seen numerous groups of Youtubers grow significantly due to their practice of doing collabs and getting shout outs from others. Also, it definitely helps with the motivation when you have a group of people around you that have a lot of the same goals/motivations as you do.

I can get behind that to a degree, though I just hate the idea of having subs who subbed me so I'd sub them, but I get where you're coming from. Regardless, you hear "sub4sub??" all the freakin time, never do I hear "shout out for shout out?" Which just.. seems so much more productive. Rather than getting a subscriber who doesn't care about your content you'll just get seen by potential people who may love what you do and sub to see it.

Word! Sub4sub helps build your numbers, but not really an audience. Shout outs are certainly going to generate a more legitimate, active audience, because I wouldn't want to associate myself with a channel that I don't admire in some way. And if I like a channel, chances are good that at least some of my followers will like it as well. It's a more authentic exchange.

That said, if I were playing dirty pool I might use sub4sub to get my foot in the door (getting the first 100 subs, maybe). Any more than that and the subscriber-to-activity ratio starts to look unattractive to potential collaborators. IMO.
