Do shout-outs really help that much?

It helps a lot, more than you know it. Depends on whose saying the shoutout, though. If they have a small audience, then it probably WOULDN'T help XD

One of my video was retweet by a 300K subs youtuber ! I got 1000 views on one nigth.... First time I got to see the 301+ after only a few hours...
So YES a shout out is VERY effective ! ;)

It would certainly drive up more traffic on your YouTube channel :) especially if the shouter is someone already established or well-known. However, if the shouter is someone who is quite small, then it would help a tiny bit, but nothing worth writing home about.. :P

I don't think I've ever been shouted out before so I can't say from first hand experience.

HOWEVER: I did shout out the NSA in one of my recent videos and they've been getting a ton of attention ever since.

Shout-outs definitely help, but they're most effective when you treat it like a passing-of-the-mic. Don't just stand there and wait for applause (subs/views).

If you know that a shout-out is coming in advance, have a new video ready. It doesn't even have to be a direct response (though reenforcing the relationship to the shouter isn't a bad thing), but it lets people know you're churning out fresh content.

If the shout out is a surprise to you, get a vid up ASAP, or tweet, just do something to acknowledge the nod.

Yes, shoutouts and collaborations are extremely helpful in gaining viewers on YouTube. If only I had such luck.

I've just been wondering for awhile. I saw a guy on a chatroulette video which the uploader has 1.5 million subs on the channel, and he gave a shout out to someone on the video who does chatroulette videos aswell, and well, it did not help him at all. i mean holy crap, i WISH i could get a shoutout from someone with 1.5 million subs. but what's the point if it doesn't work? meh well i'm just starting out on youtube and i think i can get a shoutout from a guy i know who has 30k subs, but would it even do anything? haha
It depends purely on three things: The subscribers, the type of video, and the person making the shoutout. If that person runs his channel like a cult, and his viewers do whatever he says, then you'll get views for a shoutout. If the subscribers only need one person to get their fill of that genre, then shoutouts probably won't work too well.
