Do shout-outs really help that much?

Word! Sub4sub helps build your numbers, but not really an audience. Shout outs are certainly going to generate a more legitimate, active audience, because I wouldn't want to associate myself with a channel that I don't admire in some way. And if I like a channel, chances are good that at least some of my followers will like it as well. It's a more authentic exchange.

That said, if I were playing dirty pool I might use sub4sub to get my foot in the door (getting the first 100 subs, maybe). Any more than that and the subscriber-to-activity ratio starts to look unattractive to potential collaborators. IMO.
I don't really see anything wrong with that, some people would be like "ANY AND ALL SUB 4 SUB IS TERRIBLE YOU ARE A TERRIBLE PERSON" lol but if it's just to get you a jumpstart that doesn't bother me personally.

My friend Rich Ferguson shouted me. It will probably be the biggest shout out I ever get, and it got me like 4,000 subscribers in one night, with many subscribers residual throughout the days. If you check out "kiss or slap me prank" on Rich's channel, you'll see how he shouted me out, it was pretty insane. So yes shout outs do work, you just gotta hope people find you who are cool and support you to grow. - Ken

Very true. 4,000 is a huge boost. Networking with other Youtubers is soooo important.

In my opinion shout outs only really work if the viewers can physically see you or watch a snippet of one of your videos. Saying a random name to 1.5 million people wont exactly help because their going in blind and dont know what to expect. Wether if the person shouting you out has you in one of their videos or a snippet of one of your videos in their video chances are much higher for more views & subs. Just my theory and take on it

Yes, shoutouts can help very much. A vlogging couple I watch was just shouted out in a Vidcon video and they went from a few hundred subscribers to over 1000 in one night.
