Best free editing software for starting off

Before using Premiere Pro I was using iMovie.. however, I've heard a lot of hype for a software called Filmora. Looked it up and it looks decent.. reminds me of something you'd find as an iPhone app. Put your clips in and download packs of themed templates. The only problem I see with this app is that it looks as if all of the videos made by it may become cookie cutter.. but then again I don't use too much about it.

TL;DR iMovie.
 
I'd say (at least on Mac) DaVinci Resolve Studio is great and free (at least the one on App Store). If I didn't have student priced Adobe CC suite, I'd probably be using that one. Nice editing workflow and top of the line color grading system.
