Any tips on drawing attention to comedy videos?

Hello JV, I grew a few channels before and the most important tips I can give you are networking and quality. When I say quality I don't mean that you have to make the most professional videos, look at GradeAUnderA he changed the game. Make sure your jokes are on point, no awkward pauses, and start with a joke in the first 10 seconds. Davidsocomedy and Gradeaundera are the best examples for that.

Networking on the other hand is key if you have quality content, there are many threads I've read during my time on this forum (from my older account), post your best video in an appropriate subreddit, tweet your video, tell your friends to check it out, you can just say hey bruh what do you think about this video? How can I improve it, there's always room for improvement (I digress), fb, ig, tumblr, other forums.

Remember these two advices:
1- Networking is key
2- Quality > quantity

I hear ya. I get virtually no subs through YouTube, because no one searches for sketches and, even though there would be plenty of opportunities to be suggested, my videos don't get enough views / watch time to be considered for that. I'm guessing you're having the same problems :sour2:

95% of my subs found me through some form of promotion or "exposure", mainly this forum, my comments on other YouTuber's channels (big and small) and a shoutout.

Sadly it doesn't make sense for us to engage in communities like those on Reddit, Facebook, Google+ because we don't just cover one niche/topic, and either there are no general comedy groups or they're being spammed.

I do agree about Reddit being difficult because we don't have a specific niche. Although I like Reddit, you basically have to search for a new relevant and welcoming subreddit for each video you want to share, and that can be very difficult for some videos.

Also, how do shoutouts work? I'm kind of new to the YouTube community scene haha

They're basically when a content creator mentions you in their video. If you want a good shootout I'd say approach community channels that do channel reviews, they're much more helpful.

I love creating comedy videos but I feel like it's SOO hard to grow a comedy youtube channel these day. Comedy channels do really well on youtube, but growing them takes so much time. You're trying to get people to invest in YOU most of the time.

Channels where you're addressing already established fanbases are much easier to grow but sometimes don't perform as well. Examples: Tech and Movie Reviews, Music Covers, or List and Educational videos.

I am very proud of my content, but it's soo difficult to get people to watch it. And it get's discouraging.

Any tips?

Thanks!
Brand yourself! It seems like a lot of comedy videos rely on seeking for attention. From "how-to" to fake trailers, etc.

Have you got an instagram account? I seem to get most of my response from there using all different hashtags
Whoa. I've heard Instagram success stories on this forum and it always confused me. I just looked at your tags, and I had no idea people were searching for gaming related stuff on Instagram... or anything that's not "pretty picture of a sunset", you know :O_o2: I'm following a few people but never had the desire to search for anything myself. Hmmm.

But the thing is, even you find a subreddit for the topic of one of your videos, if you're not already an active member, your post will be considered spam and removed.

Yeah you'd be right about that :/ have you had any luck with /r/videos or are there just too many posts to get noticed?

Once I posted another small YouTuber's comedy video which I really liked in /r/videos. I think it got about 100 views in a very short amount of time, however my post received no upvotes. So I assume people didn't like it, didn't watch it for long and I tanked the guy's retention :grumpy2: I guess if you posted a video of your own it would be even worse and you'd get downvotes and dislikes.

Aw man :/ how would they tell the difference between your own channel and someone else's channel though?

I'm still considering /r/videos though because 100 views in a short time even if they hurt retention seems better than 0 views in forever time XD that is unless people give a barrage of dislikes- but if it's 100 views with no dislikes that's not too bad

100 views with low retention span affects your video when it comes to searching on youtube, the lower the retention, the lower it is in the search results :)

Oh I guess if you have a different user name they won't, unless your posting history looks "suspicious".

Hm, I'd be very careful with that. If your retention is bad you may never get it back up again and it might kill the chances of your video being suggested.

From YouTube: "The algorithm for suggesting videos includes prioritizing videos that lead to a longer overall viewing session over those that receive more clicks."
