Goals for Beginners?

YouTube made a creator academy video on this topic. Basically, if you want to be serious about being a content creator then you need to create a mission statement for your channel. Ask yourself these questions:

  • What do you want to be known for? What does success look like to you?
  • What genre does your channel fall into? What are other creators doing in that category? Which ones do you like the most and why?
  • Who is your audience?
  • How do you want your channel to look in five years?Who are your favorite YouTube creators and what makes them memorable to you?
As a reference, I wrote out my missions statement to be; I want to be known for making entertaining and educational retro video game and retro video game consoles reviews. Success for me is going to conventions and hosting panels and having a group of people know my name. My channel is a gaming channel, other creators that have gaming channels tend to focus on Let's Play content. I really like Cinemassacre, PeanutButterGamer, ThatOneVideoGamer, and Game Grumps. My audience are men and women, ages 18 to 35, who play retro video games and/or want to know more about other retro video games and retro video game consoles. In five years BossKnight Films will be close to 1 million subscribers, people will think of my channel when thinking about retro video games. My favorite creators are James Rolfe of Cinemassacre, the crew at ScrewAttack and Jirard from ThatOneVideoGamer. Cinemassacre and ScrewAttack are memorable to me because they started creating content even before YouTube was created, uploading videos to their own website and on GameTrailers.com. They are trend setters in my opinion and I used to want to be them, I used to want to be the Angry Video Game Nerd as well as be apart of the ScrewAttack crew when it was mostly just Handsome Tom and Stuttering Craig, and do what they do but now I want to be the Classic Nerd and I want to create my own video game reviews, top 10 and top 5 lists and be bigger and better than them. Jirard Khalil is memorable because of his passion for video games, retro and modern, and I respect him for that.

That is my goal. That long, drawn out paragraph is my goal. I don't care about views too much, I don't care about having the most subscribers in the world; my goal is to create great content and be the best in my field.

I'd definitely agree with the popular opinion of 100 subscribers, as that is a solid goal for beginning Youtubers. Also, that'll be my goal when I start my channel! ^.^

It really depends on your level of confidence I think as well. I think I have a very good grasp of the technical side of things (especially video editing for exemple) and that alone takes a weight off, I can focus on being the best in front the camera since I know my video editing is gonna be top notch, at least for a beginning youtuber (you always get better with time after all).

So with all this, I am aiming bigger. If was a complete noobie with computerrs/video editing etc etc, I would probably be more timid about my ambitions to start off with.

A lot of people say 100 subscribers, but if I take that as a goal, how much time do I think it will take me? That's the kind of competition or higher standard that I will be challenging myself with. Always wanting to achieve better content and get better feedback from the viewers.

Just focus on your video content at the beginning - keep uploading and share the videos on various platforms and see what happens :) it'll get somewhere eventually. Just keep going and don't give up :)

I go up in fives personally. I've been doing YouTube for a couple of months now, bring out videos almost daily, and have got 13 subs. It's gonna be a long long time until i get anywhere near 100 subs, so setting the next benchmark at multiples of five feels to me as a beginner a more realistic target. But that's just me, I'm sure you'll be far more successful :).

What kind of goals should someone who just started on YouTube should strive for in terms of view count or subscribers? I know that these that aren't all there is to become a YouTuber however it is still curious to know nonetheless

I recommend you make 300 sub goal until the end of the year. Even when you don't make it, still you get to know how fast your channel can grow. Don't set any view count yet, it is impossible to predict anything, while you have under 1000 subs.
Well yeah,I say then, try to get 300 subs when new year comes. When you get it, then you can make new and bigger goals!
And I recommend you make a upload schedule aswell, because, that will bring more people to support you, when you get your videos coming up all the time, not 1 a month, like atm you have.
Have a nice day sir!

Think low. Aim for low things first. Then go up and up. Keep climbing the ladder. Keep the motivation and eventually you will have bigger goals. Just never give up.

The advice I give myself for this situation is to be pessimistic. That way you'll either be pleasantly surprised, or you'll have expected it, and you won't be disappointed ^_^

No but in all seriousness, I started at the end of August and set a goal for 50 subscribers by the end of the year. I hit 50 subscribers about a week and a bit ago, which was amazing! So now I'm aiming for 100 by the end of the year instead and I think I might be able to do it :)

In terms of views, I like to set goals in increments of 500 :)

Yea I do agree with some of the replies in this, if your making youtube videos solely for money, it's definitely not for you, Youtube should be more of a hobby if anything. I just started making youtube videos and to be honest I find it fun recording, and editing videos, it's like every video I finish and post is like I completed a "passion" project if that even makes sense. I personally, don't really even have a sub goal, but I'd say a good start would be around 25, or like what some other people here said, go up by increments of 5's. 100 subs when starting out, I'd say is pretty high and ambitious but that's just my opinion.
