YouTubes making more than surgeons

It definitely does act as an eye-opener. The other side of me though likes to look at the MILLIONS of people who make nothing off of videos and want to just make something to live off of.

It's that snowballing power of multiplication when it comes to viewers!

This is probably complete nonsense, maybe the elite few channels make that kind of money but it's still something worth talking about. I watched a video where a video maker had 200,000 subs and he said he's earning more than a regular surgeon. I've actually heard this phrase several times from bigger Youtubers, do you think its at all true?

Of course there are youtubers making more than surgeons. a quick google search shows me that some surgeons make about $500,000 per year. At my CPM I'd need about 600-700 million views per year to earn that. A quick look at Socialblade and you can find many channels getting way more views than that. And they probably get a higher CPM than I do. In conclusion, there are youtubers making more than a surgeon. At 200k subs It's unlikely but possible.[DOUBLEPOST=1434774619,1434774558][/DOUBLEPOST]
A surgeon should start doing YouTube videos of their surgeries... Then they'll be making YouTube Surgeon money!

My friend does that. HAHAHAH. he's a DVM (veterinarian). And he puts animal surgeries on youtube.

Big YouTubers can make way more than surgeons. I have two friends that both make over 100K a month from YouTube. You get about $1500-2000 per million views. So anyone whose getting 10 million views a month is probably making in excess of 15K per month and that's not including any outside revenue they generate from sponsorship.

It depends on what your videos are about. my CPM's are much lower. 0.5-2 is a decent range to assume. I'm near the low end. some people are near the high end.

What does your CPM depends on? Why some people gets higher/lower than others? Sorry I'm new. So the topic of the video?

Probably depends a lot on who is advertising. they can do focused and targeted advertising. My videos in particular are about a subject that has been deemed "not brand friendly." that alone keeps me away from a lot of the high paying ads.

Everyone tosses around the 2 dollars per 1000 views figure around and it probably is pretty sound for an average. A million indeed nets a person around 2 grand. But, the major problem you'll run into is that people seem to forget that is pre tax. In the end you'll probably loose a bare minimum of 10% to taxes. So unless you live on your own in a little studio apartment those ~1.800 dollars are not going to cut it.

I've always said that I will not even consider giving up my day job unless I would bring in 5 grand a month reliably. That would mean 2.500.000 views a month or 30.000.000 a year or 82.192 a day. Currently I am doing between 200-500 a day, so I am not giving up my day job any time soon.

People just stare themselves blind on those money numbers, and it is also the reason why YouTube gets flooded with new channels. People looking for an easy buck. Everyone soon realizes it's hard work maintaining a channel no matter where in the spectrum you fall. A list "baller" or regular joe schmo with ~1K subscribers such as myself. I am fine with it, but many just get p****d and talk the whole "why them and not me" thing. The answer is simple. They got it, you don't. Deal with it.
