YouTuber asks for free hotel room -Gets refused!

For me, she asked for too much and didn't take the hotel's business operations into account. She essentially chose HER vacation exactly how she wanted it at the times she wanted it with whom she wanted. And then decided she didn't want to pay for it and so asked the hotel for a freebie. I'm pretty sure that is what annoyed the hotel owner.

She should have proposed a one night stay for ONE person at an offpeak time. - The hotel's service and decor and location and for ONE person at an offpeak time would be pretty much the same. She'd get to experience a nice hotel in a nice location and the hotel would have enough empty rooms to make it cost effective and also maybe get a bit of publicity. It'd be a cheaper giveaway for the hotel and more importantly, there would be no opportunity cost. She asked for a freebie on valentine's day for 2 people ! Really?! Not only does the hotel not get paid for that, but she'd also be taking the place of paying customers since I'm guessing the hotel would be fully booked. So if the stay cost 500 Euros, it'd actually cost the hotel 1000+ euros.

It's kind of like turning up to a restaurant looking for a job CV in hand in the middle of peak lunchtime service. Restaurant owners HATE it when applicants do that in the middle of a service and most will automatically throw the CV in the bin since it shows zero business awareness and they are simply too busy.

It's a simple business decision. What's her demographic, and what's the Hotels Demographic? If her blog had 90k subs and was called hotel reviews Ireland, then maybe she's relevant, but for now, she's only relevant to 15-25s who want to buy makeup and clothes. So she has some value there, but as far as her viewers being in the market to book a hotel in Ireland, NOPE!

I've had free stuff related to cats, as that's my demographic, and the value has been up to about £100, so they only need to sell about 4-5 products to make the freebie worth it to them. but a £500 hotel stay in a very specific part of the world?

Exactly. The demographics don't match up at all.

My best female friend would say: "I have lady parts - give me free stuff". xD

Edit:

My point is; she has like 95k subs, 30-40k views per video, guy has like 180k facebook page likes. If I was on her place, I would pay for place. She can earn that with just 2-3 videos. XD I would ask the owner of I could record hotel room, and smart business man would never turn down a free ad. ;) She would indirectly get shoutout from the guy. Everybody is happy. ;)

Update to story: In another fantastic twist, the hotel owner has taken exception to her playing the victim card (since he never identified her in his rant) and has now invoiced her for over 5 million euros for all the publicity that he has given her lol.

The hotel and cafe proprietor has now sent Ms Darby, who has 87,000 YouTube subscribers and 76,000 Instagram followers, an invoice for the publicity she has received in the wake of their exchange going viral.

The invoice states that she is being charged for 'the provision of features in 114 articles across 20 countries with a potential reach of 450 million people', and that the publicity Mr Stenson has obtained for her would be valued at €4.3m plus VAT.

He also posted a picture of a jug containing 'tears of bloggers' after getting attacked on social media when he posted his email exchange with Ms Darby online.

lol - In other words, she benefited thanks to him ^^. Since the story broke, all the publicity has resulted in her crying video getting more than 10x more views than any of her others.... ^^

...... anyone else think the drama between the hotel and the YouTuber is getting out of hand? Cause I certainly do. That update..... wow that's ridiculous.

The notes on the invoice are quite funny: "Mentions in videos will not qualify as payment", also it looks like he ended her address that has been blacked out with "xoxoxo".

This guy certainly knows how to milk the publicity. It will be interesting to see how she responds.

I mean like wow. This is one extreme case of someone taking a YouTube fame to a ridiculous level. Just because people know you on the internet, does not entitle you to freebies everywhere you go. It's terrible attitude to have and even more when it's on display like this. But, to play the victim card is just laughable at best and at worse extremely stupid on her behalf. Do YouTube to entertain, not for the fame.
