Youtube subscribes....why are people so selective?

I've Got It
I'm new to having a youtube channel. I notice that a lot of people are very selective when subscribing to a channel. Why is that? I subscribe to a lot of channels. They can be grouped into collections making them easy to manage so why are people so selective?

Probably because there so much of the same on YouTube nowadays.

People usually stick with they ones they know unless there is something new and when they find something new it needs to have the same production value of the big youtubers.

The thing is also that there are a lot of young people watching YouTube and they have a very short attention span.

I guess because people usually watch stuff from their subscribe feed, and if they subscribe to most of the channels they come across, they most likely would get flooded with decent/not good content, and this would bury the quality stuff from the channels that they actually do want to watch. So, if people keep their subscribing to a minimum, they'll only see the best of the best.

A few reasons I can think of:
1) The mobile app doesn't support collections as far as I know of, so people using mobile or tablet can't subscribe to hundreds of channels and keep up.

2) There's no reason at all to subscribe to someone you will never watch, and people probably have very specific standards for what they want to watch.

3) A low subscriber count might turn people away from subscribing just because they are not perceived as famous. (Probably the dumbest reason, but I'm sure there are tons of people like that)

4) Videos don't pick up quickly enough in the first few seconds, so people click out before giving a chance.

So unless my channel has the best of the best, I should just give up?

No. You should never give up. Those who are big on YouTube are a big fluke and has done it for several years.

What has taken them 4 years might take people 8 years to achieve right now.

YouTube is growing everyday and in a few years 100k subs might be the equivalence of 10k subs today when it comes to ad revenue.

As everything else you really need to stick your head in there and grind. Since it's a fluctuated market you have to work a lot harder than the famous ones once did.

I just subscribe to people that I know I'll continue going back to on a daily basis. (Or other daily-basis), I don't care if they're the best or not.

So unless my channel has the best of the best, I should just give up?
You should give up only when you no longer enjoy doing YouTube. You'll have a better time earlier on if you ignore your sub and view count completely so that it doesn't discourage you.

I honestly, (with my own opinion) select channels to sub to based on size ( I like less than 100k because they aren't pressured by their audience), originality, and if they are relatable. #relatableteens (woah that could be a collabchannel!?!) not too long ago I saw two channels that could have been called twins with the same type of person and almost same subs and same look and just ALL THE SAME. If the person is relatable to me whether it be that they are a teen or living in california or have the same interests. Its almost like deciding your subs based on if you would be friends with them or not.
