I'm not going to get on my soapbox about this. This thread comes up a lot on this forum. IF YOU WANT A BIG CHANNEL, WORK FOR A BIG CHANNEL. Make consistent content, get a good camera and editing software, learn how to use the software and learn how to do new effects, research!, join niche forums, TAKE THE TIPS FROM BIG YOUTUBERS ON THIS SITE, READ THE STICKY NOTES, if you want a big channel work for a big channel.

YouTube is trying to help the lower down channels but it is really rough when you just start out there is really only a few things you can do about it and that is mostly self advertising and consistent uploads.

Something else:

I feel when you are able to hit the 301+ mark, Youtube will put your vid into some kind of temporary promotion mode. I am sure my vid was ranked higher then usual for about one week, getting extra views from the higher ranking. After that, the rankings became normal and my vids have lost their extra exposure.

So for new vids, Youtube seems to help you with that.

Making videos isn't always about how quickly you can get to 100,000 subscribers or however many you're aiming for. Let's not forget that we all started YouTube because we enjoyed making videos, wanted to give something back, or just simply love what we do and want to share that with others. There are millions of channels on YouTube and growing as a channel really depends on 2 things in my opinion:

Consistency: People will see your videos more and more with regular uploads. But not just that, they need to be consistently good content, perhaps trial run them with friends or family to see what they think and take criticism on the chin and consider that maybe they've made a good point for you to improve.

Enjoying yourself: Good quality content will come about if you enjoy what you're doing, enjoy making and editing videos and enjoy being a part of the community. Make friends, become involved more and just have a good time. I think that's what is key to remember throughout the whole process of YouTube growth.
