Would you pay for advertising?

It will probably not have the desired effect. People come across your channel all the time on YouTube. Only a select few will actually subscribe. To get a blanket coverage of many many people you will have to spend thousands. And the ROI? Next to nothing.

YouTube, FaceBook and other social media places all want you to boost whatever you are posting about if it's a brand / business. I have learned to ignore it. Unless you are an established brand it won't help you much. You are better off just growing like you are now. And if you are no longer growing you'll need to ask yourself this question: Am I still having fun? If not, quit YouTube and find another hobby. There are too many things in life that suck, your hobby should not be one.

I am going to respectfully disagree with you. It really all depends on how you target your audience. If you are using search advertising then the only people who will see your ad are qualified leads who were searching for exactly what you are providing (if you choose the right keywords). For example, if you have a channel that features 'cs:go gameplays' and you bid for the search term 'cs:go gamplays' you will get a very high subscriber rate provided you have good content. Why? Well, they wanted to see cs:go gameplays...typed it into youtube, and clicked on your ad which will provide them with what they were looking for.

Don't take my word for this. I have decided to start a short video series that will use my own small campaign that I am about to start as a case study and see how much it ends up costing me per subscriber. This will be pretty easy to determine since this small gaming channel I have has gone pretty quiet since they announced the game will be shut down soon (EA...game called Battlefield Heroes....silly cartoon shooter but I like it). I haven't gotten any new subs lately so we will be able to tell it was from the advertising.

We'll see what happens.[DOUBLEPOST=1431354271,1431354149][/DOUBLEPOST]
But what really confuses me is that I have it set up to use 0.70cents a day and that was supposed to last me 2 weeks, but then 2 weeks later I had only spent $1.70, why is that>?
Your search keywords you targeted, along with your demographics you targeted, in conjunction with your max bid did not put your advertisement in front of enough eyeballs to get enough clicks to exhaust your daily max expenditure (.70). You would have to either increase your bid, increase the demographic you are targeting, or add keywords to help your ad reach more people.

I increased by bid to $2 a day and that didn't help much. Locations is pretty broad for me. I guess I can add a few more keywords....thanks!

When I say increase your bid I don't mean increase your daily budget. I mean increase your max CPC. Increasing your budget will do nothing if your keywords are not broad enough and your max CPC is not high enough.

I have used adwords in the past and it works well if you manage your campaigns properly. I got away from it though because I felt it wasn't doing enough. I plan to start it back up because I think I wasn't utilizing my annotations properly to gain subs and return viewers and with the addition of cards it may be even more effective.

Ohhh I wish I spoke to you before starting this campaign. Can you show me a screen shot where I can change CPC, I can only find the budget per day.

Sorry actually this is a screenshot that's for the Ads, but still no CPC option..
I believe your bid strategy set to "AdWords will set my bids to help maximize clicks within my target budget". If this is the case I would recommend you change that in the campaign settings to "I'll manually set my bids for clicks". This also tells me that you still do not have a broad enough audience you are reaching and that the bid price might not be the issue.
