Would you declare spamming as something 'completely wrong'

Just for the sake of posterity, posting a "come check out my videos" comment on a video that is already similar content to what you do isn't spamming. Spamming is defined as untargeted unsolicited messaging. By narrowing the field down to related content, it is not spam anymore.

make videos that are relevant…. relevant videos promote themselves.
relevant to what?

relevant to what?

make videos people will actually search for.

In my case I don't make playthroughs of vanilla minecraft or a mod everyone has already seen I play brand new mods and in 2 of the 3 series I run I am one of 3 people making videos about the mods. so If someone searches for the magic crusade mod I'm right there on the front page.

I hate spammers, and I flag everyone I see for spam. It's annoying, and disrespectful. It's just as annoying as walking down the street and people constantly asking you to buy things/handing flyers.

If it's on my videos. I delete, flag for spam, and block. I don't give spammers a second chance.

The interesting thing for me about this discussion as it usually devolves exactly this way as expected, but I've yet to meet a person that can nail down the line between spam and not.

Here's a couple of examples. In order of degredation from being on topic.

Channel A posts a video on a certain political topic. Channel B posts a comment saying come check out my game review. (Overt advertising and off topic)
Channel A posts a video on a certain political topic. Channel B posts a comment saying Hey, I did a video on this same topic a while back, check it out. (Overt advertising but on topic)
Channel A posts a video on a certain political topic. Channel B posts a comment saying Hey, this video inspired me to do a video on the same topic. (Mild advertising while acknowledging the creator was inspired)
Channel A posts a video on a certain political topic. Channel B posts a comment saying I love your content, it's pretty similar to my stuff, keep it up. (Very mild advertising)
Channel A posts a video on a certain political topic. Channel B posts a video but marks their title, description and tags trying to show up as the suggested video so that YouTube does the advertising for them. (Clear avoidance)

The same is often true of places like Reddit. Why is posting a comment on a similar YouTube video that is related to your content any worse than posting your video to an on topic sub-reddit? Or asking your friends to share your video, many of whom will do so indescriminantly whether they like it or not. Why is paid advertising via Adwords which forces it's message on people ok, but unpaid advertising is not?

Just interesting questions. I find the aversion to "spammers" similar to the people who whine about dislikes on their videos. They do f**k all to hurt you, and if the guy or gal happens to get a view or even a subscriber, who cares? The only ones who keep doing it are the ones who see success and obviously their content must be what some people watch because nobody spams without getting results for long, there'd be no point.

I understand that, but really. It would be incredibly hard to get noticed without a bit of spamming because you could be making the best content going but if you only have like 10 subscribers you going to get like 6 views max....
You shouldn't resort to spamming to get noticed. It honestly isn't that hard.[DOUBLEPOST=1379104344,1379104095][/DOUBLEPOST]
As long as the video you comment on is somewhat related to the content you upload, and you don't sound desperate at all, then it is...OK, but you're still on thin ice. Don't just talk about your channel, actually comment on the video itself and then mention your channel on the side or something.

I remember @KGATV doing something similar to this for his parody of "Applause".

Just because they're big YouTubers doesn't mean they don't care, PewDiePie made a video where he was so annoyed with the comments sections being full of "plz check out my channel" "plz watch my videos I play minecraft" etc etc.

Other big YouTubers that I watch also get annoyed when the comments section is full of self advertising. I would be too.
Yes, I did do something similar on my Applause video. I said something like "I made a parody of this with my dog haha", and a lot of people ended checking it out. I didn't even intend for it to bring a lot of traffic or anything. It was just a simple comment :giggle:. I think as long as it's related, and you don't sound desperate, then it's okay. But as you said, it's still on thin ice.

Would you? because recently I have seen a bit of success with spamming, I go on a bigger video with related content and ask nicely, granted I get more negative replies than positive but the negative replies aren't about my videos, they're are about my spamming.

Example of a bad one: Stop spamming and advertising your channel, it's pathetic.
Note here that they did not once mention my videos just the fact that they don't like spamming

To be perfectly honest, I don't see why so many people hate spamming, it works. Especially bigger YouTubers, they're already there so what do they care? [ It rhymes :) ]

Example of a good one: I saw your channel advertised on ............'s channel and I really like your videos, you deserve a like and a subscribe.

Proof that spamming works just some people like to moan about it because they think they will get in to the bigger YouTuber's 'good books' but the bigger YouTubers do not give a F***, chances are they won't even see the person moaning about the spammer (if you understand that bit)

I admit I get more negative responses but they are about me spamming, not the quality of my videos, and the good ones are always about the quality of my videos. Look at my "FIFA 13 Online Goals Montage Episode 6" for an example
I don't care about spamming i don't do it, but i don't mind it! You have to do what you have to, its not 2007 anymore. I mean people watch ads, and they watch when people do those campaign things in other videos, and no one calls advertisers or big YouTube spammers. So why call the little people spammers? When its smaller channels it may be annoying to the channel owner because they probably can read all the comments, but lets say pewdiepie, he would never be able to read all the comments anyway so its not an inconvenience.
