Why are you a Copycat?

Well, we're just talking about people that don't really try to put their own spin on it. They mostly just take someone else's style and run with it. AVGN and Jontron both review games, but it's very hard to call Jontron a clone. The IrateGamer on the other hand, was an AVGN clone (at least early on). The difference between IrateGamer and Jontron is that one went so far as to lift jokes from AVGN and attempt a very similar style while Jontron took inspiration from AVGN and just did his own bombastic thing. (I'm not even a Jontron fan, honestly, it's just the best example I can think of)

You seem a little salty. I didn't even check you channel but i can easily assume why.

There's no need to attack me. Especially when you don't even know me. You're just making stuff up about myself. All i did was to create a topic to ask people why they're copycats. Why? Because i'm genuinely curious about what motivates them. I'm not insulting anyone.

I think there are two types of copycats. The ones that people mentioned earlier where you see someone succeeded and you hope to have that same success and then I think there's a second type of copycat where it's more fan-based. You become a fan of someone because something about them really resonates with you and you want to become just like that person, not because of their success, but because they are genuinely the kind of person you want to be or have certain traits that you wish you had. I know I do that (not for my channel), but if I look up to someone, be it a YouTuber, celebrity, friend, etc. and like a certain personality trait, style, belief, I'll adopt bits and pieces. I think that's just how people work.

He creates generic beats, pay him not mind.

When Pyrocinical sits there making thousands a month with over a million subs copying Leafy, who copied others and yet is the fastest growing Youtuber at the moment...

Some would call it perfecting an art style. Also remember there is nothing original anymore. All we can do is give it our own spin.
this. Pyro is probably the biggest obvious copycat I have seen, although his content has changed from leafys a bit recently.

Woah friend, that right there is a loaded question.

What is the point in doing something in a similar manner to someone else? What do you define as a copycat? Is this someone with a similar formula or someone who note for note copies another persons work? Cause if it's the latter than I don't know what to tell ya. It works...sometimes? Being a blatant copy of someone successful doesn't usually yield good results.

I don't think you need examples of what a copycat is. You will find plenty here.

That's also a loaded statement. I get the feeling you're trying to make people mad more than anything, but I'll humor you and answer with this. While I'm not trying to blatantly copy other channels, I am influenced by others. A lot of people are currently in the gaming scene. Whether you're doing reviews, let's plays, and or gaming news/commentaries. A lot of people do this for the audience and interaction. The reason you find a lot of people "Copy" each other is because we learn from success. Methods bigger channels and inspirations use become standards. Posting daily is standard for most popular LP channels, Talking about certain topics that are trending is standard for science shows, etc.

Doing YouTube is about staying on top of trends.
This means making content that is similar. The hard part is standing out. This is where your "copycat" channels come from. The channels that whether they're actively trying to copy someone's style or not are producing content for people.

Wearing your inspiration on your sleeve is a tricky thing because you want to show people what you like, and what you follow, without seeming like a "copycat".

Your style is formed around the content you consume. A collection of things that you enjoy being mashed together into something you can call your own.

People do things in certain ways, because it's proven to work.
It's a matter of changing it up so you don't look the same.

mastering this is the hardest thing to do

I'm fascinated by clones in general. That's why people like Caddicarus fascinate me. DNA from the original put into a new egg cell and grown into an exact replica. Fascinating.

I'm particularly interested in new age copycats. I can understand why someone would copy somebody else in an age where there's a lot of demand. I can't understand why some people are still ripping off certain styles

This question came to mind when i was watching the videos of a very small channel that was wayyyy too similar to ASAP Science. The editing was pretty much the same, the graphics were almost the same, the colors, the fonts.

Well, some people might like the style, but I believe it's mostly because they see something that's working and want to cash in. If you have enough talent to be a clone, just go the extra mile and do your own thing.

That's not what happened though. He used a very, very similar style of humor and imagery. Screenshake, font, joke timing, etc.
That's exactly what I was talking about when I said style, lol.
You do realize before JonTron became big people were calling him out on copying another guy's style, and the same had actually happened with that prior guy?
Jontron didn't invent screenshake, text popping up, nor the sort of timing his jokes rely on, lol. Not even close. He pulls it off well, but he's far from the first to do it.
