You can do it as soon as you upload a video.

I applied to the monetization option before I even had a video on my channel.
So from the first day on I had ads on my videos.
But consider, that you need 100$ to get a payment so you should have a decent amount of monthly views.
If you would for example only have 5000 views per months, it might take a year until you reach that.

This is only if you are with adsense, machinima approached me (even if I dont do gaming videos lol ?) and they paid me every month even if I did not reach 100$ that's the advantage but now... it wouldnt be a problem hahah

Yes, that's true. I didn't think about it that there are Networks without minimum earnings.
