Very disappointed with Pewdiepie and his comments

Thank you. Hopefully in the near future I can learn how to set up scholarships and be able to help kids pay for their college. Because of YouTube we are able to give back to the community and create a better life for our kids. Sadly people just see it as a the bad things. Thanks again for your support!

That is amazing to hear! I know they don't :( Hopefully this will all blow over soon. Keep doing what you are doing! We still watch everyday :)

Do I think it's exploiting of the child? No, not really. As long as the child loves to make videos with their parents I cannot see any exploitation here. BUT I can understand that a lot of people just do not like these kind of channels for their kind of content (in all honestly I dislike them as well). I just think a lot of communities just "attack" the toy community, because they do not get it. I am more a live at let live kind of person so I do not understand why people would make bash videos out of it (well, actually I do, drama=views).

When you're the biggest channel on YouTube people are going to attack you.

Ryan Toys Review did not bot or buy views and they are certainly not exploiting their kids.

There are 100's of families that make videos with kids and post toy reviews. Everyone I know in that makes kids videos - they're all having a great time.

The only difference between Ryan Toys Review and most channels is that their channel is hugely successful because they have a very charismatic kid that other children enjoy watching and they've done a great job producing content that children like.

It's pretty juvenile that a popular YouTuber like Pewdiepie has basically trolled a super nice family just because they're successful.

The following article came to my attention today via a fellow board member:

Now I did watch Pewdiepie occasionally, and did respect him to some degree for the channel he has built - we all know how bloody hard it is to grow on Yt.

However after his attack on @Ryan ToysReview, which is pretty much an attack on all of us running kids channels, I find him a childish, jealous, jaded man. Does he really feel threatened by a 5 year old's kids channel? I for one will not be watching Pewd's videos any more, nor supporting his growth.
Wow... I didn't know about this... but it seems like Pewds is pretty crappy about it... I mean I wouldn't go that far but I would think competition at some level if I were that big... and besides, most kids don't even watch him because of his language... And its really hard growing as a kid, because everyone gives you weird looks...

I understand his concerns but don't forget he doesn't have kids himself. He doesn't know my family personally and never spoke to us, not even once. Views to comments to like ratios had been proven many times by the fact that little 2-5 year old kids watch the channels. They don't know how to read, write , or even understand what thumbs up even means. Just watch any three year old watch YouTube for an hr and see how many times they bother to comment or like a video. The kids app doesn't even have the option to like or comments. Go to any similar kids channel that 3 year old watch and you will see similar ratio of likes/commments/views. My son always have a say in what video we do or toys to play with. Many toys are picked because I thought he would enjoy it. There are many videos where I let him choice the toys to feature even thou I know it won't get much views. People don't see what goes behind the video and assume that it's bad. We don't expect people to support what we do in any way. I just wish people stop assuming the worst in everything without knowing all the facts.

I still stand by what I said. I can't trust a channel where the numbers don't add up.

the numbers do add up. to really understand what we're looking at, we need to look at all the possible data points. sometimes we make the mistake of assuming all factors are the same because we have a bias towards the data we usually see from our own channel. but not all channels are the same.

there's a youtube kids app many parents use. i use it because it reduces all the videos with swearing and other videos not suitable for small children. the kids app does not display nor allow any commenting or thumbs rating. so views from the app will not have any comments or ratings and will reduce the number of comments or ratings.

however, the majority of views are from browser or youtube app which do allow commenting and rating. BUT (and big but), the demographics/audience are different between kids channels and other gaming/entertainment sites for teens and adults. little children typically do not rate or comment on videos as much as older kids and adults. a lot of the surprise egg or playdoh videos will have gibberish comments because toddlers are watching those videos and toddler tapping on their parents phone/ipad. you will see evidence of this on many other videos that small kids watch. its very common.

small kids do not go to school yet. are available to watch more youtube at home (if unsupervised by parents) than other viewers who do go to school or have jobs. kids also love to rewatch the same videos. before the internet existed I had a cousin who watched Dumbo over and over as a toddler. its insane actually. they also do not know how to read or write yet. so this is why there are so many views and so little comments or ratings. different audience.

The numbers add up completely normally.

When you have a YouTube channel that is watched primarily by 2-6-year-old kids you can get tons of views with very few comments. If you don't believe me go take a look at any channel that does Ryan Toys Review type stuff or nursery rhymes or even better find a four-year-old that can read let alone write a comment.

Ryans Toy Reviews gets as many views as they do because they produce content kids love. Kids watch the videos over and over again and frequently click on other videos from their channel.

It creates a cycle where kids have a long session time watching Ryans channel which the YouTube algorithm loves.

I am completely certain that all of their views are legitimate and it wouldn't surprise me if they're the first channel to hit a billion views a month.

I'm not trying to pick on you specifically but I think for everyone on this forum be grateful that RTR is on here.

Imagine if instead of trying to become a successful YouTuber we all wanted to become great business people. We join a local startup group and Warren Buffet shows up. That's the situation we're in right now. We should be pretty grateful!

Agreed! My younger son could watch RTR for hours if I let him. Right now he is into watching his Trick or treat video and his birthday videos. He prob has watched them both at least 5 times just yesterday! Most people aren't going to watch Pewdiepie's videos over and over, its just different. Different content and a different audience.

We're 8 pages in to this thread and some people still think RTR is using bots?

Rather than repeat the excellent points previously made about the nature of children's channels (which unfortunately Pewdiepie was unaware of) I'll add just one more:

Ryan Toys Review is under the spotlight like no other channel. Youtube/Google shuts down tiny channels when it busts them for botting, vigorously protecting the integrity of its ad system (the lifeblood of its profit). Do you really think they wouldn't have noticed RTR's ascension? Unless you subscribe to some sort of conspiracy theory where Google is somehow "in on it", it strikes me as almost impossible.

Also, props to YouTuber 1978 for reminding us that Ryan Toys Review is a contributing member of this community on YTtalk. It's cool to have your own opinions, this is a forum board after all. The issues may be nuanced and amenable to conflicting views. But do keep in mind RTR has been helpful to a lot of different people here. As many of us know, it can be an unwelcoming jungle out there at times, obviously we want to be careful not to replicate that here.

Hang in there RTR! We'll send you good karma in the hopes this blows over soon.
