To achieve this kind of effect vlog

Most probably, good lighting makes a video look so much better.
I agree with this. I have the same camera since the beginning and most people thought I changed my camera just cause the quality of my images now are very very good. All that because I found a room in my house that have perfect lighting.

Will what do you mean by these expressions? Can u explain what they mean in stupid terms for me lol

Also did u check out the helenmelonlady 'a day with joe' one? What would u say she uses?
A day with Joe looks like just a handheld DSLR with someone going crazy on the manual focus ring haha. The dreamy effect you are looking for is just playing around on the autofocus with a fast lens.

By fast lens, when you buy a lens there's a number associated with the F-stop. The lower the number, the faster it is, the more expensive it is and the softer the focus is. Which means more dream like clips.

Lastly that video was just run through some filters in post to achieve that color scheme.

Ok I'll try to explain what I meant:

1) When you see how the camera moves at the start of the clip? It's very fluid so it's probably on a tripod that's built for video.. that or it was panned in a video editor (doesn't look like it though).

2) 50mm is the length of the lens. It's also one of the cheapest prime lens you can get for a DSLR, a lot of vloggers use it. STM is also a type of lens and they autofocus faster.

3) Softbox is a giant lamp with a big white screen in front to make the lighting look more natural.

4) A type of mic that generally sits on top of the DSLR and plugs into it.

The Dan one looks like a point and shoot. A black and white filter comes with most any editing software. A Day with Joe is a DSLR, playing with going in and out of focus, and a little bit of color correction. You don't need a specific camera / software for either, you need to know how to use your stuff. You can get good looking stuff out of a cell phone if you know how to use it / cameras in general...

(That's just the first example that came to mind, not a particular impressive one since they had bad weather (=light) and didn't even color correct that much... Plus they edited on iMovie.)

Goddamn, if anything the camera operator is a genius and should be a surgeon.[DOUBLEPOST=1371588727,1371588647][/DOUBLEPOST]
Look at you, the little expert William Phan

Not at all lol. I just started out in photography so anyone that has done it would say everything I mentioned was just common knowledge.

I just see too any people buying DSLR for filming and not using the camera to it's full potential. Also I would rather film with a camcorder any day over my set up.

Thankyou will, so basically it's not so much about the actual camera but more with the type of lens/lighting set up and on a tripod would you say?

I like the effect where it's kind of blurry round the edges it looks good.

I found out one vlogger (who's videos I like the style of) uses a 18-55 kit lens is this good?

For something visually more impressive shot on an phone see Night Fishing, a 2011 short film, co-directed by Chan-wook Park, director of Oldboy, Lady Vengenace, etc...

Nah, it's more about the equipment holding the phone. And you could build that yourself with some pvc pipes.

I knew it was too good to be true.[DOUBLEPOST=1371589765,1371589549][/DOUBLEPOST]

Tripod isn't the most important, it just depends on your set up, a DSLR doesn't typically sit flat especially with a long/heavy lens. So you just want it leveled and with a tripod it helps a lot.

But yes, lens and lighting is king for filming.

The blurry edges is called bokeh and it's easier to achieve with a fast prime lens like that 50mm f1.8. The 18-55 kit isn't great. If I recall correctly it's 3.5-5.6 which won't give you much of that blurry background. But it's practically free with the camera.

It's the most common kit lens with 600Ds and their likes, pretty good for a kit lens, and typically more than enough for a vloggers need. I use it, and will keep using it for a while for vlogging type of stuff.[DOUBLEPOST=1371590292,1371589807][/DOUBLEPOST]

And it does depend on how close to your camera you are. Always puts me in the predicament of wanting to stand close to the camera for the blurry background and not wanting my face that big on screen.

But the 50mm is the first lens most people want to get as their second lens, me included, and it should cost just about 100 bucks.
