So, How do you become successful?

Ok, so we have been on YouTube for a month now, but only have 30 subs. We have a toy company partnering with us, but still not to many views. We are also on Facebook and Twitter.

I feel like I have tried everything. Any tips or advice?

Thanks!

Mommy B

Hi and welcome to YTtalk.

I've moved your thread to the strategy / technique forum. :)

This question gets asked (and answered) a lot so I would also suggest you browse the other threads in this section and elsewhere on the forum.

To fix your link, please follow the instructions in this post: http://yttalk.com/threads/how-to-add-your-youtube-channel-to-every-message-post.32/

Good luck :)

Well, since you asked, here's a quick analysis of your Mini Battle - Thomas The Train and James! - Who Will Win? video:

Tags: Using 'ryans toy review' is not going to help you since you are not RTR. You also have 500 characters to use for tags, I suggest you use all of them. Thomas is rich in tags, you can easily fill not only 500 but 1,000 characters with main and long tails.
Description: 1 sentence. Sorry, you will never rank with that. We use 3 solid paragraphs incorporating tags and long tail variations in natural sentences. Yes, big channels can get away with 1 sentence for a description because they have extremely high channel authority and high subs, so they get high views from subs out the gate and YT algo pumps the videos out across the feeds. For channels with ~zero to very low authority your best friend is high quality seo.
Title: I only see 1 keyword 'Thomas the Train' and that is very competitive. I suggest you use 1 or 2 long tails in addition to that.

Those are the absolute minimum benchmarks if you wish to rank against stronger channels in the category, of which there are many.

Overall channel:

Thumbnails: the text colors blend with the picture making the text hard to read. Only 2-3 words of text is more than enough, remember your target audience is 2-5 year olds, they are not going to read text! Try to bring emotions out in the picture, look at what the top channels are doing. Use your kids faces with bright happy colors and lots of facial expressions to make kids want to click on the thumbnails.

Channel tags: you're using 'maya hulyan' and 'ryans toy review'. You will not fool the YT algorithm into associating your channel with those top tier channels, there is no point in using other channel names (I believe it's against the TOS anyways). Fill your channel tags instead with as much meaningful tags related to your content as possible.

Annotations/Cards: I didn't see any cards promoting your other videos or annotations asking to subscribe on desktop.

Intro: I didn't see an intro welcoming kids to the channel. Kids like to be talked to and welcomed and feel part of the video. Get your kid to wave and say his name and say hello to the kids watching.

Outro: No end card with a link to subscribe and other videos. These help a lot. Don't forget to thank kids for watching and ask them to sub.

CC: Helps with seo especially if rich in keywords, and also yt will place your videos for those who are hearing impaired, which is a good karma thing overall

Videocraft: Your latest video - the camera moves all over the place, the box with the book is in and out of focus, hard to see what's going on in the first minute. Try to keep the camera stable it's distracting and dizzy. A tripod or sturdy surface is best.

Playlists: There's no description for the playlists. I think YT gives you like 5,000 characters to write a description. Use it to make the playlists discoverable in search.

Good luck!!

Thank you SOO much! How should I tag? I really have no clue on this. I have read several things but still not sure. I read somewhere to ask the channels that are most popular :/ Can everyone see my channel tags? What are long tails?

Also, I was trying to be a little different with my thumbnails, didn't want to blend in so to speak.. but I will try your advice!! I don't have photoshop, but maybe a simple pic and some text will do? Also, We now have a welcoming message and a good bye message, just started that :)

I know I have added Ano's and cards, so I'm not sure why its not showing up.

I am only using my phone right now, I seen a gorilla tripod, do you think that would work?

Thanks for all your help!

Some info about tagging:

There's 2 Chrome plugins you should get: TubeBuddy and VidIQ. Play with both and see which one you like, then use that. I have the paid version of TubeBuddy and the free VidIQ, but both free are fine to start with. They will help immensely with tags. They will show the tags under each video you visit, and any search ranking for those tags. They will also show (once you click on a tag), related tags, top videos using those tags, etc, etc.

A simple thing I did when starting out was visit the top 20 most popular videos for say Thomas and Friends, and get all the tags they use in a spreadsheet. Here's an example from the Excel, together with one of Ryan's Thomas videos tags shown via TubeBuddy. I then use whichever tags are relevant to my videos (and of course add a few of my own variations).

There's no point asking big channels if you can use their tags, I think using other channel names is against the YT TOS (maybe others can clarify this more), and big channels will likely not reply. Also, they have no incentive to do this, because it potentially confuses viewers and takes traffic away from them. It's like you opening a hamburger joint and calling it McDonald's - that won't last long!

Long tails are variations. So say you take your kid to the park and do some videos with Thomas, Percy, down the slide, they fall, crash, whatever.

So the main tags would be: Thomas and Friends, Thomas & Friends, Thomas and Friends Accidents will Happen, Accidents will Happen.

Some long tails could be: Thomas and Friends Accidents will Happen at the Playground, Accidents will Happen at the Playground with Thomas Trains.

Basically it's search terms that may not be searched often, but give greater context for your video. If you have it in the title/tags/description, and it's very little used, you'll rank page 1 for it. But if the traffic is too low, you won't get views from it. So you need to find phrases that are searched often enough, but don't have too much competition.

Here's a TubeBuddy listing for "Thomas and Friends Accidents will Happen at the Playground", something I targeted. Notice that it also has several primary keywords inside the long tail, so that's good.

A gorilla tripod should be ok, basically anything steady, you don't want the video photography itself to be distracting.

There's some free graphics software you can use, I think there are even web based ones. You'd probably want to do something with layering as eventually you might want to add different backgrounds or toys overlays.

Wow, Thank you so much for taking your time to give me some tips. I really appreciate it! I will def be working on this!

I use picmoney right now, It may have something like that I can use.

Thank you again!!

Some sound advice in this thread that'll I'll be following up with my channel when I have the time.

And advice for OP don't he disillusioned by 30 subs in 30 days, just aim for double in the next 30 days and double in the 30 days after that etc. hugely competitive market so aim to improve on what you have and set achievable targets. You won't be RTR overnight unless you have a video go viral.
