Should I tell people I know about my channel?

I don't see why not. If you are not comfortable with others seeing your content you shouldn't put it on-line for others to see anyway!
 
It's a mixed bag. No doubt some would not take it seriously or even make fun for being "weird". While others would be very curious to find out, especially if your channel has an impressive sub count.

Personally for me, I'd wait until mine reaches 10,000 subs.
 
I told my absolute best friends about my channel. It's gained popularity now across most of my good friends, and I got a lot of them to collab so far, and I haven't been getting too much hate. I'd suggest doing the same.
