Shooting videos in RAW

I've Got It
Hello.

Over the past month I spent a lot of time on YT looking at film making videos so I can learn and then know what I'm doing when I start making videos myself. The video that always catches my attention is when people make comparisons of footage shot on normal settings and in RAW.
Some people say they they can't see much difference or that they prefer the standard format but I see a HUGE difference. The footage looks so much better quality in my opinion.

So, has anyone got experience with shooting in RAW? What are you thoughts?

From what I see most of us on here use Rebels so we would have to get Magic Lantern to do it. Also, how storage intensive is it really? How much RAW footage can I fit on a 16GB card?

Can't answer the last question without knowing camera model and resolution you'll be filming in.
RAW is completly useless for things that aren't filmmaking. It adds colour grading to the workflow, which I imagine you aren't familiar with. Colour grading is rather tricky.

I see a big difference between h.264 and RAW, but I don't use it because I've never really needed too, even though I have Magic Lantern installed on my camera. It takes up a lot of space though.

A 16GB card might hold like 3-4 minutes @ 1080p. Yeah, not much. Might wanna stack up on SD cards if you're planning on shooting in raw, and fast ones.

I have the Canon EOS 760D (t6s) and I will be shooting at 1080p25.
I'm actually very familiar with colour grading :), that's the main advantage of shooting in RAW (apart from the better quality image). If you set the right picture profile you can completely change the look of your footage and for us beginners with not the best cameras and lenses I think it can really make a difference.

Hmm, currently I have two 16GB Sandisk ExtremePro cards and one 8GB Kingston card. They all have a "10" rating, are they going to be fast enough?

I want to try it but I have never gotten round to it. I would mostly be concerned about the amount of space recordings take up and how long they take to export/render etc and if it slows any of the work flow down.

Yeah it's definitely not the best option for a daily vlogger but if you upload once or twice a week it might be worth putting in the extra time.:)

Thats true yeah, if I was making videos that took a month or so the time investment would likely be worth it. I still want to try it though, is there raw for a 650D with Magic Lantern? I could try it on my secondary camera :D

Yes, it's available

I've been wanting to try this! I always shoot photographs in RAW, and it makes such a huge difference! I'm planning to take an online class about editing picture colors and shading to help make my photos stand out more. I think those kinds of skills could transfer over to video editing, especially with raw video footage. My problem would definitely be the size of the files... I have a 32 GB SD card, but I usually have to go through several takes before I get my act together and properly make a video.. >.> Constantly stopping to delete a take would get frustrating, but I would run out of space so quickly if I was recording in raw! =/
