I think theres a lot of emphasis these days on meeting quotas on quantity for a channel. But in all honesty im not going to subscribe to a channel that upload 3 videos a week where I might only like 1 of those videos. it causes more problems than it benefits for me to sub. I have that problem with Boogie2988. I love his vlogs and rambly videos but I cant stand his francis or game talk. So I have him bookmarked but I'll never sub to him. Quite a few smaller youtubers are the same for me. I'll bookmark them to keep an eye on what they're doing but if they're uploading 12-15 videos a month and I only want to watch 4-5 of them all its going to do is clog up my feed and put me off watching the videos I would have liked to watch.

I guess what im trying to say is Quality is paramount. only upload frequently if you can maintain at least an acceptable standard of quality. Never just shove a load of rubbish up...you'll bring the wrong crowd to your channel.

That's fair. But the only point people talking about quantity are making is that YouTube itself rewards quantity and that's why people are doing it in the first place. It wouldn't even be an argument if YouTube didn't favor the videos of people who post more frequently and have high audience retention. If the algo just cared about audience retention then everybody would be making the highest quality videos they could make however long it took. But a big extra push is given to people who produce more often and so everyone is jumping on that bandwagon and they're okay with loosing a sub here and there from people who feel as you do.

Who can define "quality"?
guess we are all proud for what we upload as long as we have our videos public
and we all have that belief that we do from ,...ok to ...decent to good... to ...excellent work...

Here is another rather extra simple opinion: quality comes from quantity,
meaning tthat the more you make videos the more you get better,
the more you interact with your channel (tags, keywords, thumbs, comments)
and researching options and what is all about, the more you get into the game.

:)

I suppose it isnt necissarily morally sound but with quantity I guess its a bit of a knock on effect; More videos mean more videos to view means more videos being viewed means more money being made. Though can you imagine a world where everyone just made the very best videos they could and uploaded them whenever and it was a judgement on what you said/showed and how well your videos were made rather than whether you can "Ham Slab" 700 videos out a day and swamp the platform...

Well I suppose "Quality" can be quantified from the technical and written industry standards that have been developed over the last 100 or so years of television and film. thats the bass level measuring stick for whether something is good or not for me at least. equally the subversion of those rules knowingly to make something purposfully awful can also be seen as a sign of quality. in understanding the basics of how to make film and television you are then free to either climb up the quality ladder or flip the ladder a middle finger and go for a beer xD

I suppose the argument could be made that you only git gud by making tons of mistakes and tons of mistakes amasse from making tons of videos. and the more videos on your platform the more chance of people seeing you occurs and the the more people who see you the better your chance of being successful. where it gums up though is when you find channels uploading 10 videos a day under clickbait titles with just some rambling unrelated to the video title audio and copyrighted images. thats the downside of the quality argument because the sheer mechanical scale of operations just blots out other higher quality users.

you are right! I didn't thought of this kind of videos.

Let's put another factor in the the equation.

Dedication and willing to get better to what you love.

Not famous or rich or whatever else than getting better.

A mediocre video of e.g. a difficult car modification from a guy loving cars
maybe can be quality content as long as he knows cars
but not industrie's standards on filming rather than basic rules.
The value of the video is not always in the process of making.
(although I totally agree with your definition on quality in your post).

This is why im always one of the first people to promote media outreaching. If you have qualifications in film and media and you have the time reaching out to dedicated specialists and teaching the basics will really help get them on the straight and narrow :)

The reality as you rightly say is sometimes just being very dedicated and willing wont always yield the best results and that the content of the video often will trump the quality of the video. Though in my experience with youtube usually its only a matter of time before someone comes along whos a bit more tech savvy, remakes that initial video a bit clearer and reaps the rewards as a result.

Hearts important. I'll admit that, your channel can still be successful if your souls good and your charismatic enough to keep the audience on board. though if your really dedicated to sharing on youtube I'd argue that it wouldnt hurt to have a night or two booking up on shot compositions, stylisation and editing techniques. :)

There is room for both. If you can truly put out A* top content - go with quality.
If you are like me and you dont have the skill or the time - go with quantity.

I think maybe at FIRST, try quantity? get your channel out there, get some exposure and a small pool of an audience, but definitely you want a perfect compromise eventually where you post consistently but not to the point where your videos are bad. Eventually you want to prioritize quality over quantity.

Thanks for the great discussion everyone. I certainly wouldn't rank my video editing skills as top tier, but I also know that I spend a fair amount of time trying to get it as good as I can. And I think that shows in a channel and viewers have a pretty good ability to see through the BS. My concern is probably more against the youtube algorithm that allows videos to surface that may not be as high of quality. I've seen some of my content and content from other smaller channels just get lost in the abyss because it never gets found. :/

It's certainly more competitive than it was even 2 years ago.

That's the whole reason I started my channel. To try to see if there's any way we can manually turn that around. Even a little bit.
