As a business, views are how you get paid, so they are what matters.
Subs are critical for getting the initial view counts that will propagate the video into search and suggested. Without subs the initial release of the video is dead, and the video can't get suggested placements due to low views.
Subs seem important for the corporate side, like a famebit account, and for negotiating better deals with MCNs. If you have 500k subs you can dictate terms to an MCN or walk away, if you have 10 subs, well you take their terms up the proverbial. I've also read that sponsored videos get paid by the number of channel subs, not expected or actual views.
