How do you guys feel about YouTubers having merchandise?
Have you bought any merchandise from YouTubers?

I know some YouTubers have made the transfer from vlogger to singer, and buying their music isn't really the same thing. I'm talking more about T-Shirts, Hoodies, Cups, Posters, etc.

Some examples of YouTuber's with Merchandise:
OfficialNerdCubed
The Yogscast
Rooster Teeth
The Creatures
CaptainSparklez
Cowchop
Markiplier
  • Is Merchandising considered a good way to make money?
  • Do you own any YouTuber merchandise?
  • Have you got any merchandise for your own channel?
  • Ever been recognized for having/wearing merchandise?

Is merch a good way to make money? Probably make less than ads, but still money's money (Rhett and Link had a sale on some novelty limited edition item and it was 100% material cost/no profit but other than that there should always be some profit)

I got none, but some merch is pretty cool and I wouldn't mind owning it.

No merch for me. Though once you have say 100k+ subs and are hitting 200k+ daily views merch is something you can consider.

No

I think merch is cool anyways, least the ones that aren't like "oh hey I'll take a pic of goku slap it on a shirt and put 2 words I said in 1 video.... buy my merch now k" the more unique merch is ideal, or things with actual unique logos. Like... septic Sam plushes that's cool, or CowChop squiggle cup I think is pretty neat-o.

I've considered merch but heck, I just got over 300 subs. Ain't nobody gonna buy my tshirt! So I can't say it wouldn't be successful, but you have to see how loyal your fanbase would be and would they actually go out and buy your stuff? I do have a Java Central tshirt and it made my freakin day when someone said 'heh nice shirt' (for reference, it is the I <3 NY logo but it's 'I [redcoffeemug] Java Central'

I think it's fine, because it serves a couple of purposes. First, it gives you a bit of extra cash, and second, if it's merch that has your logo/info on it, then you get some extra, small-scale marketing/advertising. Win/win!

Mostly, though, it's hard to scale for a small creator. Most on-demand merchandise creators pay you absolutely nothing, and if you're going to use a larger, cheaper option, you have to have enough of an audience to get a lot of merchandise moved.

Moved to the strategy / technique forum. :)

I think a channel would have to be huge for it to make any sense. I don't think it'd earn much money but would work well for branding purposes I suppose.

When my channel is bigger I plan on doing it actually. Money is money and any little bit is a difference.

Regardless how small you are, I recommend you wear Merchandise that promotes your brand. I've been doing it since I had only 800 subscribers. Don't expect someone to buy it, lol I've only had 3 sales and I've set my Twitter programmed to promote it every few days.

I would love to make some merch other than shirts, but its a complicated business. Im talks for a possible web shop front, so we will see how that goes, but for an artist I think it's pretty suiting, especially posters and things

Yeah it would be a good match for your channel. Did you go to vidcon this year? I know you got invited. That would have been a good opportunity to sell some. ^^
