Massive drop in views on kid channels

Someone left a nice comment on FTC site

The ruling to blindly enforce COPPA is short-sighted and will have significant negative consequences if implemented. Children will continue to use YouTube to educate and entertain themselves in 2020, exactly the same way as they did in 2019. They deserve quality content that positively influences their development which can only be produced by content creators that are able to monetize their work through ads or product placement engagements. In absence of a business model, most content creators will not be able to invest their personal resources to continue doing their best work. Nobody is denying the importance of protecting children and young adults, but it is critically important to identify a path that will actually achieve the desired objective.

Specifically on the YouTube platform, the tracking and advertising on children's content can be limited to viewers that are logged into the account and, as a parent, provided explicit permission. Collection of usage data and related targeted advertising for viewers that are not logged in can be limited in scope to a single session. With this approach, YouTube's algorithm will still benefit the viewer by ensuring that the recommendations are appropriate and are based on what the viewer is watching, but the collected information is ultimately discarded. This is similar to how session/transient cookies are often used in browsers to allow the website to function by maintaining the user's preferences as they navigate the site, but then get deleted after the session is completed or the web browser is closed.

This is a new problem which was created by modern technology. We can use the same modern technology to fix it.

targeted ads will not be allowed if they suspect the viewer is under 13. Recommending content based on that same data will likely be allowed. As for that genre of creators earning a living, it will have to be from non targeted ads based on the content or presumed audience, not 'known' audience.

Coppa law is flawed. They should allow targeted ads on all content. YouTube is not some crazy guy collecting personal data. There is nothing wrong with targeted ads. For 10 years it did no harm to any kid. FTC is a bunch of morons who turned coppa law around. Instead of using it for online protection from individuals they using it to block nice features like notifications, targeted ads etc.

Thing is, there were studies done for COPPA to be passed, so it's not based on conjecture/thin air but scientific studies. Without more research however saying that it doesn't harm a child or anything is just your own view of it without any actual evidence one way or the other. It sucks for you and many others who are about to lose their revenue stream, but no one should ever rely on one site, and it's an expensive lesson learned.

I follow a lot of channels that make kids videos similar to mine, and I was excited yesterday to see my views were up substantially Saturday , around 20% which is good, as I have been used to the never ending drip to zero...however , when I check all the other sites I follow, everyone of them is also up...how can this be explained ?? How is it possible everyone gets more views ( not because it's Saturday, ) they have been rising slowly the past 3 weeks.

Something is up with YT. I think they are working on the analytics algorithm or something. My channel was booming and then the stats just froze solid and have not updated in about week. Whenever they do update, I expect a huge leap stats. It is hard though to know what is going with such an inconsistency in stats.

do you mean analytics ? Or different stats, because my stats are working and haven't stopped, I am referring to youtube analytics. Still again today I see a small upswing, and it is very much needed.

Although purely anecdotal at this time, we also observed a tremendous change in views for a newly posted video. They may have changed something. I can't stop laughing at how the majority of channels are pretending to be an educational channel and are all about science experiments now. The absolute greed of some channels led by Ryan Toysreview or excuse me Ryan's World (LOL), is shocking to the core. Where were all the science experiment videos when the algorithm would bury it? Youtube's actions with the algorithm is in violation of the Stipulated Order for Permanent Injunction and Civil Penalty Judgment issued by the US District Court for DC against Google LLC and Youtube LLC by the FTC and the State of NY. Hopefully Youtube's lawyers have already realized this and order the engineers to take action before someone with standing motions the courts to step in. Perhaps they already have.

Why education videos? How is that not aimed at children? Ryan’s World’s examples of education videos is still blaringly aimed at kids. What’s the endgame there?

Its interesting to note that it has been 90 days since the july crash. Ive heard theres some significance to the 90 day report. Maybe theres some correlation. From looking at my suggested, im still disconnected from some channels that used to send me major views. So that hasnt changed. But overall view count is slowly increasing.
