Massive drop in views on kid channels

The FTC changes only protect kids from advertisements (kind of) or having their data tracked. It does not address or protect kids from the bad content like elsagate stuff. What do you think about sponsored content which are basically advertisements too? FTC says kids are harmed because they’re too young to understand what a sponsored ad or even what an advertisement is.

I have respect for you and your channel. I think you have done things the right way. Although COPPA has nothing to do with Elsgate, bad baby, and et al, it certainly has played a major role in getting rid of some of the harmful trends due to the attention it has shined on Youtube. There is nothing wrong with kids being exposed to advertisements and it is fine to make money off kid videos. Just make sure you provide proper disclosures. The ads need to be like TV where it is content based. Youtube can easily push hard to put content based ads on kid channels and everything would be fine. The problem is Youtube won't invest the time and money to getting this done. In reality, a lot of the illegal personalized ads were a mix of tracking data from the minors and adults sharing devices which resulted in children being shown personalized advertisement that was a waste of money (example car ads, insurance ads, and non-kid movie ads). Then the adult might have been shown a child's ad due to the sharing of the device. So it actually makes sense even in a practical sense for all ads on child videos to be content based and not personalized.

I want to be very clear, content creators are NOT to blame for COPPA violations. Youtube is solely responsible for their flagrant disregard to federal law. Youtube's unlawfulness is related to their collection of data and falsehoods about claiming Youtube main didn't cater to under 13. There were many solutions available where Youtube could let kid content creators continue to thrive. Youtube made a selfish decision and threw kid content creators under the bus.

Now youtube needs to play a fair game. IF you mark your content as 13+ it should be removed from recommended next to kids videos completely so they dont get kid traffic otherwise it will be unfair.

Now does anyone know if they will remove all kid videos from old playlists since you cannot save to playlists?

SUBWAY TRAIN... squashed then electrocuted

Sad day in youtube. I have badanamu learning, and all kinds of stuff in playlists for my kids.
How will these channels even make it? Big loss. I know they have other revenue streams, but, I don't see this working out.

It's interesting how YouTube is effectively letting us manually override their AI - the first time I can remember them doing this. No appeals, no manual reviews etc.

She makes it very clear in the video that it's ultimately creators - not YouTube - who decides if content is for kids. We hold the power.

Clearly this is YouTube trying to absolve itself of any legal responsibility. But theoretically, what would happen if every creator just ignored the AI? Would the FTC then individually take every single YouTuber to court? Unlikely!
aha... a "we told you so type thing". Glad I read this.

Your replies are always empathetic, kudos for that

You’re right, it’s super tough. It feels like drawing a line in the sand, a conscious deliberate step away from a genre and style that have made us millions since our channel started. It’s frightening. But I remind myself that we are being forced— and, theoretically, we got very good at making videos—that ability to make content that has high retention should carry over to family content instead of kids content. The views will come. Just like they did when we first started and built a younger fan base.

I’m patient. It feels like starting over, and we choose to be excited about it. We’re having fun.
Thanks. I figure we’re all getting screwed together, whether we agree with each other or not. I havent been able to commit to any plan. Too much indecisiveness. Maybe it was the 5 stages of grief. I’m probably going to keep doing the same content and hope things work out next year. Whatever is coming I think I’m finally ready to accept and figure things out one day at time.

Okay, guys, I have been doing tons of research since I posted this. Here is what I can tell you. It is really bad. How bad, will be only understood in time, but I suspect that next year it will be a blood bath. The FTC is coming after Content Creators directly and very few people are safe. YouTube is trying to pass the buck onto us by asking us to tell them if our videos are kid directed or not, but it is essentially the same thing as having two guns pointing at your head. Choose one and you lose all your earnings. Choose the other and you open yourself up to life-destroying fines.

Here is what I know for certain. This is EVIL. I say this because what is going on is the intentional punishing of Innocent people for the crimes of others. The COPPA law is to "PREVENT" companies from gathering data on children. No creator is doing that. Google is the one doing that. But the creators are the ones that are being punished for Google's failure to comply with COPPA. And by offering the choice to us, YouTube ss saying that they do not intend to stop gathering and using children's data, they are just making us responsible for how they are using it. So what the FTC is planning to do to creators is NOT preventing Google from gathering the data, which is what the COPPA law is supposed to do.

Listen. Walt Disney TARGETS children!!!! Walt Disney World is nothing but a huge targeting of children. Every toy company in the world Targets Children! IT IS NOT ILEGAL TO MAKE CHILDRENS DIRECTED CONTENT OR TO MAKE MONEY OFF OF IT! So not only is what the FTC is doing to online content creators evil because it punishing creators for crimes that others are committing, it is also unfair, because in order to be fair, the FTC would have to shut down Walt Disney and every toy company in America, because they ALL target children in their advertising.

Guys, this is an absolute violation of our Constitutional right of Freedom of Speech and freedom of expression. It violates the very core foundation of our nation which guarantees the right of the pursuit of happiness. Get on the phone to every political representative you have and tell them that 2020 will not be a good election year for them if they do not put this out of control tyrant of an FTC director back in his box.

I just want to know some conspiracy theories as to why this is really happening.
Much like the doctors around the round table with a lung transplant patient, claiming it was Vaping, has nothing to do with big Tobacco. (new news story seen on TV).
There is something going on behind the scenes. Someone has cashed into some sort of stock, some sort of insider trading.
Big moves like this don't just happen without those in power calculating everything first, to see how they benefit.
Maybe it may seem like I am stirring the pot, but really, what the heck is really going on?

So I have a question that is kind different. As most of you know, my channel is not kids directed at all, but as my niece pointed out, the name of my channel might be misleading. I am a real-life jungle explorer, having lived and worked in jungle exploration for over 20 years. Many children's channels on YouTube have jungle explorer themes. I am worried that might lead to me being targeted.

So here is what I am thinking. I make 90% of my ad revenue off of about 5% of my videos. If I designed the 95% of my videos as Child-Directed (to minimize my risk) I would still do okay. But my worry is that, if I do that, it would make it appear that my channel is mostly a children's channel, and also youtube says that if you choose this option, your videos will be recommended to kids. Two things concern me.

1. If I list most my videos as Child-Directed, will that cause YouTube to categorize my whole channel as a Children's Channel, which might draw MORE attention to me for the FTC?
2. YT says that marking a video as Child-Directed increases the chances that it will be recommended to children. My video are NOT for children (even potentially dangerous for children) and if they show up in children's recommendations and parents complain, could cause a backlash against my channel?
