Licensing to TV

Apologies if this isnt the right section.

Ive been approached by two German TV companies who want to use a couple of clips out of my videos. They want it for single use programmes with rights to show online and on tv. Not total rights to my content in perpetuity or anything crazy, it all seems legit and above board. Both are offering credit and attribution for my work.

Ive asked for some pennies but both have stated that there isnt any money available. So it looks like either my negotiating skills are bad or they dont have any money? Both have offices and staff so i guess theres a bit of loose change floating around the place.

Do i hold out and dont let them use it if needs be? Or just go with the extended exposure i get from the links and sharing that they might have? Your thoughts would be greatfully appreciated, thanks.

Speaking as someone who has been lucky enough to have a few songs licensed for professional series, including for Amazon's Red Oaks series, if the people asking for your work are not paying you anything upfront, chances are it's a scam, especially if it's for television and not an online series. It's a big deal if your content gets a lot of publicity, and you shouldn't need to worry about not getting compensated for it like you are now.

I meant scam in that you're getting ripped off by the offers. I fully admit I don't have a basis of opinion about whether the companies are actual companies. However, possible exposure is not enough.

I personally got paid upfront fees of quite a lot for each song of mine that has been licensed so far. That being said, while it may not be a huge deal if you don't get paid as much as I did, you need to get paid for your work somehow.

Course, I'm speaking from the perspective of a musician getting licensed: I fully admit that, for all I know, it might be slightly different for other creators of media.

thank you for the clarification, yes it does feel like getting ripped off, these people are all getting paid salaries and such for running a company, why would they think that they key ingredient the content is free?

im not seeing much difference in our work, you create sound, i create visuals, we are both creators, congratulations on having had your work appear on such a prestigious stage

thanks for your insights, appreciated!
