I'd like to offer thoughtful reviews of your channels

If you ever have time, I would appreciate a general channel review too

Also I really appreciate what you're doing for everyone! I really mean it, Thank you :)

Hi Alvan,

I’ve enjoyed looking through your content today, and I’ve got some thoughts for you.

What I think is going well:

- You’ve got a good personality and presentation. I watched your oldest videos and compared them with your new ones, and I have to say that you’ve improved a lot. Some of that is that you’ve aged and are naturally better at stuff because you’re learning and gaining confidence, but some of that improvement has to do with practice and hard work. A lot of people have great ideas, insist on being the star of their own channel, but their delivery is bad. That’s a recipe for failure, but you have good ideas and you keep improving on the delivery. Your personal presentation is watchable, not mind-blowing yet, but you’re likable and you have a smooth delivery. I’m excited to see where you’re at a year from now.

- Your video ideas aren’t super elaborate, but they’re creative enough to allow you to riff and offer some ideas. I like that you’ve been doing seasonally-appropriate material lately, and I really like your Valentine’s Day video. It had some nice gentle digs at people who do the day wrong :) There’s enough variety that I found myself enjoying the process of selecting what to watch next, and that’s a very good thing. I’d encourage you to keep that variety coming.

- You’re willing to take some risks. The execution isn’t always there, but I like that you’re willing to play multiple rolls and sell out with your acting and editing for the sake of your point or your joke. The world has enough people talking about nothing into a camera on YouTube, and I appreciate that you’re trying some things to keep it lively.

- I like that your videos change setting. My channel is of such a nature that I’m sort of locked into a set for all my episodes, but you have flexibility and you take advantage of that. Nice job.

Areas where I see the most opportunities for improvement:

- I say this in most of my reviews and I’ll say it again. You’re the star of the channel and you need to make yourself look and sound as good as possible. Invest in a mic and lights (3 simple chicken coop lights will cost you $30 and hugely improve your production value), and make yourself come off better.

- You could use more brand continuity throughout your channel. Visitors won’t know what you do or what you’re going for as the channel exists right now. A best-of montage intro video might be a good fit for your channel. Before you put out another release, I’d make a fun, clear intro vid that captures your personality and the flavor of your channel.

- After that, I’d make banner art that also communicates those things.

- A new title might also help achieve this. Your current title (while it is useful because it’s your name) doesn’t do enough to distinguish you or cue your viewers as to what they're getting into.

- Where you’re going for scripted/story-telling at times, it might benefit you to bring in some friends to play some rolls. More people = more energy (another point where I need to dream up ways to improve as well).

- You have some audience engagement going, but there’s a lot of room for improvement. I’d consider hitting the Twitter circuit hard for a while to promote your stuff and build more involvement from your viewers. You could do some special edition videos in between your monthly big releases that might invite interaction you could respond to in your successive videos as well.

I think you’ve got some good stuff going, and with steady, continued improvement, you could find a more significant audience. You’re brave, engaging, and talented and that makes me think you can grow this channel and your quality if you value it and want to invest in it. In summary, you’re getting your feet wet and your initial offerings show promise – if this is something you want to succeed at long-term, I think you can.

Thanks for considering my remarks. I wish you only the best amigo.

Thanks,

Matt

You're actually the first person to note how much I've grown as a Youtuber! Of course, I'm not stellar, but I really appreciate the recognition. I also have a few privatized videos that have really cringe worthy deliveries, but that's a part of growing. I'm glad I'm likable to you because that's definitely one of my strengths that I'm learning to master. This paragraph alone is so inspiring! I just want to go and make a ton of videos now haha.

Your video ideas aren’t super elaborate, but they’re creative enough to allow you to riff and offer some ideas. I agree, that my videos not super elaborate. Right now I don't write any scripts, and make videos based off a couple ideas.
Although I lose out on detail and miss a couple good jokes, I feel that I should practice presenting to the camera for now. I never even thought about my variety! I've just been making videos based off of what inspires me. I'll keep note of it though.

You’re willing to take some risks. The execution isn’t always there, but I like that you’re willing to play multiple rolls and sell out with your acting and editing for the sake of your point or your joke. The world has enough people talking about nothing into a camera on YouTube, and I appreciate that you’re trying some things to keep it lively.

I've never thought of this either! Playing other roles and such felt like second nature to me. Definitely another point to note.

I like that your videos change setting. My channel is of such a nature that I’m sort of locked into a set for all my episodes, but you have flexibility and you take advantage of that. Nice job.
It's kind of fun running around to different film locations :). I'll keep this in mind too.

I say this in most of my reviews and I’ll say it again. You’re the star of the channel and you need to make yourself look and sound as good as possible. Invest in a mic and lights (3 simple chicken coop lights will cost you $30 and hugely improve your production value), and make yourself come off better.
I bought a mic recently, but it doesn't work with my camera... I plan on buying a new camera, or finding a way to use the mic though. I've been meaning to buy lights too, but I guess I shouldn't be slacking on this if Youtube is important to me.

You could use more brand continuity throughout your channel. Visitors won’t know what you do or what you’re going for as the channel exists right now. I agree 100%. I'll be working on these things.

A new title might also help achieve this. Your current title (while it is useful because it’s your name) doesn’t do distinguish you or cue your viewers at all.
I use to have the name "Alvanthesnowman", but I decided to change it. I can see why using my name doesn't have strong branding though. I'll think about this one.

Where you’re going for scripted story-telling at times, it might benefit you to bring in some friends to play some rolls. More people = more energy (another point where I need to dream up ways to improve as well).
I've never even thought about this! You're just blowing my mind with each paragraph haha. By storytelling do you mean actually telling a story like my "Embarrassing Washroom Experience" or do you mean having two characters talk to eachother? Either way though, having other people could help out a lot. I've always wanted to make sketches!

You have some audience engagement going, but there’s a lot of room for improvement. I’d consider hitting the Twitter circuit hard for a while to promote your stuff and build more involvement from your viewers. You could do some special edition videos in between your monthly big releases that might invite interaction you could respond to in your successive videos as well.

I'm actually working on growing my Twitter right now! Also once school is over, I plan on making weekly videos because monthly doesn't feel like enough.

I think you’ve got some good stuff going, and with steady, continued improvement, you could find an audience. You’re brave, engaging, and talented and that makes me think you can grow this channel and your quality if you value it and want to invest in it. Your encouragement is so heart warming. I honestly can't thank you enough for all the help and time you spent. I really want to invest into Youtube too, so I'll get working on all of this as soon as I can. I feel inspired (even more than before) by your belief in me. I want to thank you again for your help. I really mean it from the bottom of my heart.

If there is anything I can do to help you, just ask. I'll try my best to help you back!

Hey there I'd appreciate a review on my channel if you have the time. Thanks :p
Good morning,
I've checked out your channel and I have some thoughts. I apologize in advance that my review may seem comparatively short - I've got some catching up to do on some life stuff and need to tick a few things off my list today. Here's the bullet point version of my thoughts.
- I'm a sucker for a good channel intro video and I saw that you just posted a new one a few days ago. I like it. It told me what you'd be doing, how you're different from other gaming channels I look at, and it gave me a little sense of who you are (though not enough - more on that in a minute). The music is catchy and makes loading your page nice instead of annoying. Good job with the production value on that video as well. As a matter of personal taste I don't care for the old "hey guys" intro on Youtube videos. Maybe you were being sarcastic by throwing that at the beginning, but I'd encourage you to think of a more original way to welcome your audience. I know that last point is super nitpicky :)
- You are good at Advanced Warfare. I play on the Xbox one, and I'm competitive in that I'm a consistently in-the-positive player, but you're just casually slaughtering people - impressive. The one-shot video was fun.
- This leads me to my larger point. You seem like you're good at video games which I think is important to having a video game channel. I think you'll do well to highlight your skill in a certain subset of videos that give people the chance to see the best stuff you can do.
- That said, I also like that you put up a video of you clumsily murdering a patient on Surgeon Simulator. Funny and gangly is good for gaming videos too, and I'm glad you seem to have both. Some of what you posted also served as being informative/opinion oriented (like your piece on the difficulty or lack thereof of Bloodborne). Show off, funny, informative, and opinion all have their place and I'm glad you're doing them all. I think it's wise to have a very clear and good reason for every video you post. If viewers feel like you just threw something up there for no good reason and feel like you expect them to watch you meander around; they'll bail. Your videos generally have a point, and that's important.
- I'm glad you're getting a camera on you soon. Viewers want to get to know the host and that's harder when they don't see you. You've got a good voice literally and figuratively and you're wise to bring that further forward in your mix so that people can track with you better.
In summary, I think you've got good stuff going. Your production value on your intros is good. I like your theme music. Your thumbnails are good and give me the sense that each video is different. You have good variety. The big hurdle you've got to overcome is the same one that everyone else in your genre has to overcome: The fact that there are ten gabizjitrillion gaming channels on YouTube. I'd suggest watching others and being not like them. Keep looking for your own angle, and even though you come off as interesting and very capable, just you being you isn't enough to differentiate yourself. Almost no one on Earth is singularly interesting enough to play video games while talking and utterly dazzle an audience. It's just not an interesting enough engagement in and of itself to win people. The gamers who have huge channels did one of two things:
1) Found a really unique spin to put on their videos, channel, production, and style. They offered something (an angle, a bit, a gimmick, a look, something) that no one else was, or they did stuff other people were doing but way, way better.
2) Basically won the lottery by having their not-special channel be the one that just happened to catch on. For every one like this, there must be hundreds of thousands that run for three months and then die.
My point is this: Be like group one. You are in control of the fate of your channel. If you like doing this and you want your channel to grow, you can make it grown by flexing your creative muscles and doing something others don't in a way that's a ton of fun. You seem like you have the talent to make that happen. If growing your channel a ton isn't your ambition, but you enjoy putting together good videos that are enjoyable for friends and a few followers to check out, then I think you're doing pretty much great as you are. Your stuff is very watchable, better than most of what I see, and you come off as a decent person who's easy to root for.
You've got a good start here, and I think where it goes next is entirely within your control. I'll check back in from time to time to see how it's coming together for you.
I wish you the absolute best moving forward!
Take care,
