How much time does it take to "get the ball rolling" using YouTube

It took me about 4 to 5 months to start scraping at a usual 1 sub per day..

sometimes I get 5 subs in that day and now I won't even get a sub on a day.
 
It can take longer if you don't really know what you're doing. Let's say you make a crappy let's play channel. (there's a trillion of them on YouTube) You have a crappy mic, you barely talk, the video game music is 10x louder than you and you just keep making those videos over and over and over and think, "some day I'll get 1 million subscribers and 50 million views". Well then it is never going to happen. You would be lucky if you gained a sub every week. You would die before you reached that goal.

Keep honing your skills, find what works for you and what the people want. The more you work on it, the faster it's going to happen.

Pretty much everyone on this forum spends all their time trying to figure out how to get a steady sub count- there are plenty of theories but there are no hard or fast rules and generalising just isn't really helpful!

Like newage said, it really probably comes down to what you're willing to put into it and how mainstream your channels topic is.
 
I have a pretty good example of a success case. iDubbbzTV use to make videogame joke videos and he would get maybe 500 views per video which is pretty good for a video game channel. Later he realized that it's not working and really just a waste of his talents. He started doing KickStarter Crap videos where he talks about the crap that is listed on KickStarter. Hillarious videos! I subbed after watching a few of them. (You don't have to view his channel or anything, just take my word for it. Please don't delete this post @Crown, it's just an example)

He then moved on to doing Bad Unboxing where viewers send him stuff and he unboxes it. Not things like a new gaming mouse or something, but dildos, insults, just crap. It's really funny to see his reactions as he is a really down to earth guy.

Now he does Content Cops which is still just as funny.

So he really just honed his craft over the years and figured out that he had to go further with his comedy and think outside the box.
