How much time does it take to "get the ball rolling" using YouTube

Pretty much everyone on this forum spends all their time trying to figure out how to get a steady sub count- there are plenty of theories but there are no hard or fast rules and generalising just isn't really helpful!

To get steady subs you need steady views.

To get steady views, you need:
- a video (or set of videos) that hit popular search terms and being related in some way (to a bigger channel), hence the video being featured in suggested of large sub channels
- a video ranking near the top of the page for search for a specific popular search term
- a video shared on a popular blog or popular social media account that generates traffic for a significant amount of time, and when that video's time is up, another video is there to replace it

The above 3 cases would get you steady views that would translate into steady sub growth. As a ballpark, you can expect 1 sub for every 500-1500 view.

I see a lot of people on this site telling people they need 50-100 videos out before they get anywhere. This is extremely ignorant and simply untrue. It just depends on quality and exposure of your content. Exposure is the first thing, in which that way people can actually SEE your video, then quality so the enjoy what they are seeing and want to see more. It just depends on how well you do both of these. I've seen channels hit 100k after only a month with 15 videos just because they hopped onto a brand new bandwagon before it got super popular which gave their video tons of exposure. Knowing bigger youtubers also helps, such as FaZe Nikan ( a member of the huge FaZe community ) decided to make a channel and got 200,000 subs in one day just because of how popular their group is.

I have a pretty good example of a success case. iDubbbzTV use to make videogame joke videos and he would get maybe 500 views per video which is pretty good for a video game channel. Later he realized that it's not working and really just a waste of his talents. He started doing KickStarter Crap videos where he talks about the crap that is listed on KickStarter. Hillarious videos! I subbed after watching a few of them. (You don't have to view his channel or anything, just take my word for it. Please don't delete this post @Crown, it's just an example)

He then moved on to doing Bad Unboxing where viewers send him stuff and he unboxes it. Not things like a new gaming mouse or something, but dildos, insults, just crap. It's really funny to see his reactions as he is a really down to earth guy.

Now he does Content Cops which is still just as funny.

So he really just honed his craft over the years and figured out that he had to go further with his comedy and think outside the box.
Yeah, I've actually seen that guy. Never really checked him out though. We aren't really a gaming channel so not sure how much his story relates to us. But yeah honing your craft is definitely important and something I myself and my group have been doing. We started YouTube to hone our skills in fact.Trying to get feedback on what people like.

I've been consistent since November and I'm starting to see consistent growth...but I also finally found my niche...so its getting increasingly easy to target my audience.

I have been at it for 3+ years now and I am still "trying" to get the ball rolling in that regard.

My average sub count per day is +6 and views +1,300 a day according to social blade. In terms of numerical success compared to other YouTubers in my genre I am failing. But, I started it as a hobby and as such I am still having fun with it as a hobby. Don't get me wrong, I'd drop my day job in a heart beat if the numbers start making sense. Which pretty much requires a factor of 20. (+120 subs a day and 26,000 views a day which is still nothing compared to the big YouTubers).

Almost 6 months and it's about 2 subs every 4-5 days when no video is out and 10+ when I put something new out. So just put out what people are looking for. It'll come

There's a lot to say about this but I will agree with Toys, a "breakout" video is the best thing that can ever happen to anyones channel that is constantly putting on quality content. I've researched channels that have about 1 mil subs and below and their first 50-100 videos will be VERY low in views, their current vids will say have 200k and their first 50-100 will have about 10-15k views, then ALL OF A SUDDEN their 101th video will have 150-200k plus views and from there each video has an immense amount - it's always when they start a NEW SERIES is when they start getting traction. Some luck goes into picking the right game for you that will give you that big break. Each of them started gaining a bunch of views only on a different series, it was never the same series and BAM boost in views but a different game they decided to do. So keep playing, play different games that you like and see if maybe that game will be your big break --- I'm hoping on No Man's Sky like no tomorrow and dedicating myself to that game so I can hopefully be the to-go guy for that genres since the huge channels won't have the luxury of sticking to just ONE game. ;D
