Having more subscribers get your more subscribers?

I definitely think this is the case. You go to a random channel of your interest and it has 100 subs to another who have 100,000 subs, you'll be thinking either consciously or subconsciously that the 100k channel is a proven channel and therefore more willing to give that channel a try.

Here's how I think it works for many viewers:

Small Youtuber
Viewers:
  • When being directed to a random video that turned out to be awesome! - will likely subscribe, and be excited about being one of the first subscribers too!
  • When being directed to a random video that turned out to be rubbish - will likely not give the rest of the channel a second look, and assume the bad quality was because they are new/still learning. Some errors can be forgiven on smaller channels, and many can look past small flaws.
  • When searching for an informative video where they want the best results fast - will likely check sub count/ view count before picking a video to watch, and will be less likely to pick a smaller youtuber, they feel have a higher risk of wasting their time than with an established youtuber.
  • when searching for something random/funny/niche' - will be more likely to watch smaller youtuber's or ones they haven't heard from to discover new comedy/funny videos.

Large Youtuber:
Viewers:
  • When being directed to a random video that turned out to be awesome! - will likely subscribe, but sometimes will just note down the username and remember to come back to them now and then so as to not be spammed.
  • When being directed to a random video that turned out to be rubbish - will llikely think "what the heck why does this person have so many subs for this rubbish" and will then look at other videos to find out why they are so popular. might leave feeling dissapointed, or find something they like and sub.
  • When searching for an informative video where they want the best results fast - will likely check sub count/ view count before picking a video to watch, will pick the larger youtuber, but will expect high quality.
  • when searching for something random/funny/niche' - they aren't going to find many hidden gems from big youtubers, likely their friends may have heard of or seen some of the viral video's on big channels.

So TLDR:
being big attracts viewers, but they will hold you at high standards because you are big, so no slip ups in quality or comedy etc.
being small smaller, people will look past some flaws, and if they find something really enjoyable, they will likely share your channel with others, people love to be FIRST.

bottom line - if your videos are amazing, people will sub no matter what your sub count is

PS: hiding your sub count can put people off, thinking your up to something shady

oh and another thing, people subscribe more when you are near a milestone, I've definitely noticed that!

If i see a channel wit super high subscribers that posted a fun video, i'd be more inclined to check out their channel because i'd expect they have other funny videos too considering how popular they are. On the other hand if I see a funny video with someone with a low subscriber count, I might just think this is the golden goose and the rest of their content isn't great, or they might not even have any other content and won't bother even clicking their channel, so yes I definitely think this plays a factor.

It does not effect me, I always make it a point to watch 1 video, the one that has the most traffic and see if it makes me laugh or surpasses my horrible ADD, if it keeps me watching for more than 15secs im in, otherwise my ADD kicks in and I get bored after the first 5 secs.

I think it is just an initial impression of your channel! I think you can find some unique and talented people with not that many subs or views, and then YouTubers with millions of subs and it's like HOW?! I think this one depends on the situation! :)

Yes, I believe so! Everyone wants to be around the popular kids and listen to whatever rubbish coming out of their mouth. You could be saying the most realist, dopist thing ever but no one cares because you are unpopular.
