Final Cut Pro?!

Getting a MacBook Pro is a good idea, and Final Cut will definitely be a great upgrade from Windows Movie Maker. You're making the right decision!

Just a question, are you a student at all? Or have a sibling that is? You can get quite a bit of money off Apple computers. Thats what I did!

Yea I'm a full time student. What do you do in order to get a discount for being a student? Will they ask you when you buy it?

I got a student discount/rebate when I got my first Macbook in 2010 (got a free printer!). I don't actually recall getting a discount when I got my current one, but I'm sure they do student discounts, and all you'd need to provide is maybe a school ID? I'm actually not too sure. I don't think they're very strict about it though - since you're young, they'd assume you're a student.

In terms of software, I have a Macbook Pro, but I do actually use Premiere Pro, just because all my prior experience was on Premiere, and I also work in Photoshop, Audition and After Effects, so the synergy between them is really fantastic and useful. That being said, a lot of the filmmakers and editors I know of usually work exclusively on Final Cut Pro, as it is a very reputable name and considered arguably the best editing suite available, short of Avid, which is the one most used for big-budget movies (but I doubt you'll need to use that for YouTube, haha). Furthermore, iMovie, which does come free with your Apple suite, is a huge step up from Windows Movie Maker, so already you've got a leg up! Either way, this thread could erupt into a PC vs. Mac battle, but basically, from your videos, Bre, I'm guessing you're not a gaming channel? :p So for you, the bottom line isn't so much which is the "stronger" operating system, but what personal preference is. I love how streamlined Apple's operating systems are, and how everything has a synergy, both in-app, as well as with other Apple products.

Literally just sign up to Student Beans or UNiDAYS and redeem your discount from the Apple store on there, it directs you to the Apple Store for students then you can save a lot of money. I got my MacBook Pro for £860 instead of about £1000.

Personally, I think Windows PC's are more versatile. I'm convinced they have stronger software engineers and go through more rigorous quality control procedures. I think Mac's are a little better for music editing, photo editing, and video, in general, so it does tend to appeal to YouTubers. I bought a Mac to see what all the buzz was about, and it's okay..nothing super spectacular..Using Microsoft Office products on it gets very annoying. I can only really use it as a hobby computer as most programs need Windows.

My absolute favorite cheaper simple video editing software for Windows was Pinnacle Studio (I had version 14..I'm not sure what the new versions are like). I couldn't do a lot of fancy extra stuff that Final Cut Pro X can do, but it was fairly cheap, I think it was better than iMovie, and did what I wanted it to do for simple HD video editing on a Windows PC.

I think Final Cut Pro X is very powerful, and I'm able to do a lot of new fancy things with it. It comes at a steep price and needs, what I would consider an "overpriced" computer to run. I'm not convinced it's worth it, but I've been fairly happy with it so far. It does crash sometimes, and I have lost some of my editing work, but this problem would probably happen less often if I upgraded the ram and went a little more easy on adding multiple layers of HD video..

Just some thoughts! I feel like I was in the same boat a few years ago.. If I could do it over again, I probably would go with a PC.. There are some very powerful PC's out on the market these days, and they cost much less than Mac's. This thought seems to be more against the YouTube norm though!

I'm going in store to buy it so I'll ask them about the student discount thing. Also thanks I found this very helpful!
